Thank you for this video Sorin. It is very educative, especially because of the example where power management chip via current sensing input resistor did not see short and thus shut down input Mosfets. In this case resistance was high enough not to trigger input Mosfet but internal protection in the charger kicked in.

It is the same like in the pc grapics card if you have 4 phases you can run with only 3 only problem is shorter life time of the other 3 phase. I test it on benchmark and it is working normaly but i will put mosfet back because of less stress to other 3 phase. I learn so many things from this channel.

if i saw well the GPU has 3 phases, removing one mosfet the GPU works in two phases and so also gets feedback from the other two coils, the GPU will work but at full load it will run out of current one phase less current is missing

i think the same. i was under impresion gpu had 4 phases. Sorin simply disconected one phase and laptop will work fine untill gpu ask for more power, then two things will happen, either laptop crashes, or gpu will be limited and throttle back. I had Desktop GPU with burned phase. had to remove both low and hi mosfets, driver and coil. gpu worked fine but showed lower scores on benchmarking.

Love your videos and thanks for teaching. Often you reach a conclusion without explaining how you worked it out. So when there was no voltage at the charging port how did you know the charging port wasn't the problem and hence to check for motherboard short? How did you know the charger wasn't bad when there was no voltage on the charger?

Thank you

Sorin, you don’t have to replace the mosfet on modern Multiphase converter it can detect and not use the Missing rail, it will work but it is not ideal for law phase count or high power draw. Buildzoid from Hardcore overclocking channel always does this.

From stabbing many GPU input inductors in my repair attempts and sanity checks with known-good cards, 0.8Ω is normal for the GPU Vcore resistance. 1.2Ω (older cards) to 0.6Ω is typical, depending on the GPU.

Wow I actually had the same high-side MOSFET fault like this one but didn't know for sure, but that's on the 3.3V and the SuperIO is sitting right beside it! By the time I get to test this the SuperIO is already gone (getting mad hot)... And the SuperIO has the BIOS on it so it's a goner... But in my case it's water damage and not whether the quality of the laptop is bad
@Vasilis_Parlamentas
@Vasilis_Parlamentas 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Sorin! Because you removed that dual MOSFET you cancel one of the 4 GPU power phases. So either the super io regognise that and work that GPU with only 3 phases meaning that maybe laptop cannot overclock that GPU or push it to the limits. OR laptop will crash when some heavy application (like games) force that GPU to work under full load and needs all 4 phases.

@Sorin, I know it is 3 months later watching this video, but it was interesting. The MOSFET you are missing is very unusual. Leave it to Fairchild, the company of brainiac engineers who were the foundation of Silicon Valley, and started the semiconductor revolution. Looking at the data sheet, the same time you were looking it up, it is a 10 pin MOSFET. YES 10 pins( before we get into semantics, it is actually 10 contact points). Pin 9 (GND), and The High Side Drain HSD, Pin 10 are on the bottom side of the chip! The HSD is also connected to Pins 3 and 4.

It looks like the short could have been caused by whatever was on the board and not the component. Maybe the FET is still good. That kind of looks like a splash of solder.
