if it requires a current to maintain its on-state, it's not bistable is it?

No, that's why it is annoying that sellers call it bistable. I made this video as a warning more than anything.

First A Bi-Stable relay is a relay that has 2 stable states, hence the term Bi-Stable. Most of these rip off boards are not bistable relays, they just have a bistable IC which actuates a relay via pulse. If you really must use a relay, you would be better off using a PWM drive for the relay. Like any motor, a relay requires more current to actuate it, but once actuated it only needs a holding current. Most of these circuits only run the relay at full current, so you are wasting power by using one of these. If you want a bi-stable relay, check with the seller that they know what they are talking about. There are different types be that single coil or double coil, but they have one thing in common and that is they do not require any holding current once actuated.

I got some relays a few years back when going through the Make:Electronics book they are not the module type though and need a diode from what I recall. I need to get them out and have a play around. Thanks for posting

The basic relays I used in earlier videos were from the Make electronics kit.

Can this be used to switch ground only? And can it be activated by ground that is a 12v supply circuit? Excuse my ignorance. I am a mechanic, electronics are not my strong point. Or do you have any other videos you could link me to, that may help? Thanks

i found those 1 and 4 way bistable flip flop switchs,they can come with or without relays ,just add momentry to trigger and ground ,then push on,and push off ,they were only few dollarsand 3-24 volt range , thought they work well for lights ,blinkers and horn on electric bikes

hello thanks for your video ,was hoping you might be able to help me ,when you first connect power to this module does the relay still stay disingaged or does it activate,ill be using these for the accories on electric bike so each time i turn the power on i need the relays to stay untriggered , this is what happens with those simple 555 timer ic circuits,hope you are able to shed bit of light for me thanks KT

Relays stay in the normal position until given current through their coil. A module shouldn't switch the relay until it is given the proper signal. You need power to switch the relay, but you can easily power the module without switching the relay.

Does the relay revert to NC when it loses input power?
@Electronzap
@Electronzap 4 жыл бұрын
The module needs to stay powered for it to act like a latching relay. So if power is cut from the module, it will be in the normal position of closed for the NC switch and open for the NO switch.

How do I make a momentary contact switch like this one into a smart switch. I have blinds that I need to hold the switch in the down position to go down and the up to raise the blinds. So does anyone know how to make that a smart operation? Thank you.

This is absolutely not a bistable relay! The module simulate keep relay by electronics circuit. It still wastes energy only for holding N.O. position in contact. As my humble opinion, the module is an useless design for re-using surplus dirt cheap production NON Bistable relay.

great its a relay that need current to hold >_> google lied to me it was supposed to only need current while switching not to hold

I was going to ask if you had dogs because you seem like a dog dude then I clicked thru to Instagram and boom there's his dogs haha Anyway Thanks for the vids I'm brand new to this my dad was an electrician but he never showed me anything! of course that was way before Amazon yo Were you in the military? what would be a good starter kit for someone like yourself, like which tools are your favorites and such.. ok peace out stay alive ✌

I do like dogs, but never had one of my own. I help take care of family member's dogs, which are in the pictures. The best beginners electronics kit I have come across so far is amzn.to/3BklDo7 (affiliate link) ELEGOO Mega R3 Project The Most Complete Ultimate Starter Kit w/ TUTORIAL Compatible with Arduino IDE, I was going to primarily make videos based on the components in that kit after I bought it, but it looks like only a few people bought the kit, so I mostly use components from elsewhere now. I like all the stuff that I use in my videos. I bought everything I have, so it was all stuff I actually wanted and was at a price that I thought was reasonable at the time.
