The portals allow you to level without the time moving. You can also abuse the health cooldown as the item timer moves but the global timer does not.

At the moment there's only around 10 pieces of gear in the game, with no randomized stats as far as I know. This will most likely change at release. As for the demo though, it's not really useful other than a few minor circumstances.
