A graphite or stainless nozzle liner would definitely increase longevity though, aluminum picks up heat very well which will cause some erosion. @ElementalMaker Remember leverage, if you need more than 50 pounds with the load cell use a lever and pivot and put the load cell 2x the distance from the pivot as the motor load point, now you have a 100 pound setup. (Will be interesting to see how those nozzles hold up, I'm thinking they are going to melt)
@ElementalMaker6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that could absolutely be done, I just want to keep the measurement as direct as possible, because then the beam could begin throwing off the test through bending and introducing a larger moment of inertia to the system.

Use a lever arm to transfer the linear thrust force into a decreased torque, and then multiply your result by the ratio of your lever arm. Tiny load cells can do big jobs, and big load cells can do tiny jobs.
@ElementalMaker6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my only concern is that the increased moment of inertia from a heavy/rigid lever arm will hurt reading resolution because the burn time of a rocket engine is so short.

7075 is tough stuff, but doesn't take heat well. That's why we use 6061 and 6063 for motor cases. Not as strong as 7075, but handles the heat better. The aluminum nozzles won't last with composites, you'll want graphite inserts for that. Also... Highly recommend you read "ECP" by Dr. Terry McCreary, before someone gets hurt.

Just remember a 500N load cell can be taken to 1000N for a very short time, will just cause a zero shift in the cell for this, and long term it will eventually fail, but for short term use will qork fine. If you want to have better accuracy get a 250kg loadcell (2500N) and use it at the lower end of the scale. Longer life, less drift and slightly more noise, but overall much better. Better loadcell to get is one that is designed for inline use, typically looks like a puck, much easier to mount and also has the important overload protection built in, and also no errors from offset forces. The screwdrivers are very very nice, much better than the run of the mill ones. Just never let them out of your sight, they get magically broken. I have a pair of the dollar store ones for that purpose, just buy a new set when one breaks.
@ElementalMaker6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was looking for inline load cells, but the Chinese dont make any cheap knockoffs like they do with the cantilever beams, and knockoffs are all that are in my price range. I also just picked up some wally world brand supertech screwdrivers. Gotta say, I'm actually impressed with them. Maybe because I was expecting so little, but definitely workable for chores around the house when I dont want to misplace my good vessel drivers.

noice amounts of fan love! nice to see you giddy about it, as am i to see you put it all to use! anyway, you seem to have a vast knowledge of *things* and i have a random and possibly stupid question: are there *any* uses for cigarette ashes? I've had a collection for a while now which was supposed to be used as a nutrition enhancer for plants. I've seen no noticable changes from using it as opposed to not using it. if you know of anything or any way to utilize it, I'd like to know what it would be. if you think you could put some to use, i might could find a way to send you like a half quart ziplock bag of it. they are from menthol cigars if that matters and I've noticed a bit of a vinegar similarly in the way it smells. I'm not guessing it could be used as the carbon portion in gunpowder, but i figured, who better to ask.... except maybe Cody. homeboy has a use for *everything* it seems.
@SeanBZA6 жыл бұрын
Nope, ash pretty much is only going to be useful as plant nutrition, especially for plants in poor soil. for regular plants mix it with some Epsom salts 50/50, and then dig into the top layer of soil, then water. you typically use a teaspoon per small pot, and it will make a big difference then. for rockets they would be an unburning filler material, pretty much what you do not want in a rocket, unless you are using something like a solid/ liquid propellant. with the liquid being chlorine flouride or FOOF, in which case pretty much anything will be a fuel.
@ecliptix16 жыл бұрын
You can make potash from ashes, although it's typically done from wood ash. I don't know how well it would work from what you have. I believe Cody's Lab did a video on it a while ago, or you can easily find the process via a google search
@pyrusrex28826 жыл бұрын

They are rocket motors, most rockets are made out of a polymer, and have a ceramic motor, which often break during flight and reduce the travel time significantly.
