Considering Galeb Duhr, Gargoyles and Xorn, you could also inject Earth Elemental encounters that are less about summoning and more about independently minded creatures from those planes. Gargoyles in conjunction with a Medusa could set up a menagerie encounter where half of the statues in the garden are victims and others are Gargoyles. Xorn could be used almost as a taxi service whereby they could be hired to burrow tunnels in the Underdark where other routes are not available. A Galeb Duhr might act like a sage for the local region, having retained all the memories of what it has seen. One might show up with gifts of gems and such to bargain for advice and information. An "Oracle of Stone" if you will. Going with more of a Fire theme, the Azer are a great resource if your adventure or campaign is around the manufacture of an item to stop an evil god or dragon. Their elemental forges and expertise might be the key to victory. What about a concept of an Azer revolt against a Salamander overlord? Free the Azer, and they'll agree to forge your weapon. Just some thoughts. I do like your idea of Mephits as familiars. It's odd that they are not. That might be a topic: Familiars - the mage's loyal friend (sometimes...). What they used to be, what they are now, who has access, what they can do, how non-Wizards can gain one, and so on. I'm a big fan of them, and if I can summon one, I always do.

I remember I had an encounter where a town was flooded with mud mephits who coated the town on mud looking for shinies. They then summoned a bunch of them when they learned what they were, but they didn't count in how they can summon more of themselves. I ended up messing up a bit and there ended up being some 100 mud mephits crowding a giant wizard tent. It was hilarious.

well im running a campaign that kinda revolves around the idea of atmospheric horror and the cthulu mythos. Either topic is awesome but there isn't a lot of help that i could find revolving around the lovecraftian style of horror. How can i truly make my players feel insignificant without taking the fun away or what monsters exist already in D&D that maybe we could learn about that are brought from or inspired by cthulu mythos?
@winowindow

King Zackaria I would really try to make combat a bit of a slog. Keep the party from resting regularly, but give them really good rewards at the end. I think that might really set the tone for you. I would also do a lot of things with disease and poisons. Light hitting creatures with long lasting effects. Again really good rewards and maybe doubling xp will need to be the counterbalance, but food for thought I hope.

If you need more Elemental monsters of the Water and Air Varieties, you can use modified version of a Kraken or a Sea Serpent, and there's always monsters from previous editions that you can use, such as the Belker, Swarms of Tiny Elementals or Elementals imbued with Law/Chaos/Good/Evil.

I remember one of my favorite characters was a druid, tainted with revenge from an "evil" god of nature that entered the realms to assert an updated perspective on the natural order. It allowed him to summon evil elementals based on ravenloft. Grave, blood, mist and pyre elementals became a very cool twists on party mechanics and switching the story up a bit. Evil or just new and different? Love this content and miss yalls, hope yer all doing well.

I'd love to see a video talking about the Genasi or other plane-touched races! Also perhaps a video about non-elemental denizens of the inner planes (or even denizens of any plane that aren't necessarily aligned either by type - elemental, devil, Fae, etc), if there is a trade in slaves from the prime material bustling in the City of Brass, are there humanoid communities on the inner planes? What does that look like?

Ratstail91 Monsters in 5E are a bit on the weak side. That or PCs scale too well. Either way encounters in 5E tend to be easier than you think they'll be if you just use stuff straight out of the MM.
@JPruinc
@JPruinc 7 жыл бұрын
Ratstail91 Yeah. The CR system is suspect at best. Especially if you're using optional rules: multiclassing, feats, flanking, etc. Your players will most likely wreck an "appropriate" encounter.
@chaddixon9764
@chaddixon9764 7 жыл бұрын
JPruInc Are feats really optional? I don't think I have ever heard a DM not allowing it.
@jimdavis141
@jimdavis141 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, feats are optional, and if you use them you will need to adjust your monsters accordingly. Judging by online discussion, many DMs seem to use the optional rule, but that doesn't mean feats aren't considered optional by the base rules.

I don't know if you already covered this content, but on the topic of Elementals, Web DM, what about Genasi, the half-elemental humans? I mean, if you haven't already, that should be a springboard for the next content, if you have, feel free to claim otherwise. But let me tell you what, I liked them most in 4th edition. In pathfinder and whatnot, they are have their own flavour, each unique, but in 4.0 in the forgotten realms campaign/players guide, they had a feat that genasi could take that allowed them to have more than one elemental proficiency and embodyment... Seriously, talk about these folk... they're quite the forces of nature

We've got show ideas for each of the races, we'll cover Genasi then - although I'm less familiar with their 4e iteration. As for Forgotten Realms shows, we'll see. I don't follow canon when it comes to published settings so when I run the realms it's a jumble of 2e, 3e, and 5e material.
@wolfscourge
@wolfscourge 7 жыл бұрын
Understandable, thanks for the reply. As I said, 4e genasi were a bit over powered. You could basically take a racial feat to give yourself the ability to take a different element that you were able to control. To my knowledge you could take it as many times as you want until you ran out of elements, and each element gave you a different encounter power... They even had a paragon path if you took that feat if I remember right

a very interesting Idea regarding summoning is making the summon its own character, and acquiring its aid and loyalty a quest in an of itself. so you can't summon an earth elemental, until you manage to send a message or gate to the earth plane, then you have to find maybe an mercenary elemental or maybe strike a deal with an genie, or just befriend or help one of them to get permission, their name and the specific arcane rituals to successfully summon that mercenary or an agent of that jinn. they could have their own personality, opinions and connections, flaws and strengths, and abilities outside of fighting so that summoning isn't just "I create a sack of hitpoints and damage for this fight." if they don't want to do that or are not high level enough they could get a golem instead, which is also an interesting plothook. maybe they buy it from a retired wizard? or steal its control stone from one of their enemies?

I never cared for Mephits, they are just elemental Imps. But what about the idea of Mephits being magical upgraded Imps that absorb elemental energy into their body to turn themselves into different type of elemental mephits? Like if the neutral mephit is attacked by a fire spell or it touches flames it turns into a fire mephit? I like that more than just small elementals.
@josiahklein70
@josiahklein70 6 жыл бұрын
Wesley Valk Hey. What about a Mephit that befriends a Genasi or other elementally attuned player character. Right now, I'm thinking of an air Genasi with a friend (not servant or pet) cloud, which is a talking Mephit, because it has a whole lot of roleplay and game mechanics opportunities. The cloud can emote through its form, becoming darker when sullen, stormy when angry and listlessly shifting into shapes when content. Maybe, it can carry its friend on itself, perform favors for them, have a laugh or two, morph into a weapon or tool -- the possibilities are truly incredible.

a bolt of earth? like a rock or something? if it is a physical piece of earth being hurled it has to be physical damage, use a combination of bludgeoning, slashing, and piercing just re-flavor it, for example: if the 'earth bolt' is made of sand say they used some minor fire to glass some of the sand, and instead of saying "you take this much bludgeoning and this much slashing damage" say " the torrent of sand combined with your fire creates a whirlwind of death that tears flesh from bone and painfully deep lacerations" changing damage types is no big deal, but if you aren't changing mechanics then feel free to narrate however you want, if your fighter can pull the head off an Orc with his bare hands (physically impossible) why can't your elementalist use the elemements to do cool shit . . . i don't think anyone cares if a spell is this damage type or another as long as what they are doing is fun for them and is epic

Fun things to do on a pirate ship: hunt giant sea creatures, go deep sea diving for treasures, make alliances with other pirates, attack other ships and steal their stuff, search forgotten ruins on deserted islands, trade with sea folk - merfolk, tritons, sea elves, etc. Do you play video games? Assassin's Creed: Black Flag is great inspiration for a pirate game, I highly recommend it.

I'm planning on having a class of cultist Mage fighter hybrids (man I might need to shorten the name) that use elementals in battle to up their own strength though the elementals. What's the moral backing behind killing fiends? I know fighting elementals and constructs are usually consequence free, but since fiends have personalities and are the embodiment of evil, is it moral to kill them? There is the whole Blood War complication, where fighting one of the fiends strengthens the other.

Gertrude Smeetheens Nah they aren't getting tired of it. The thing is I almost never use a monster 2x and Trolls have appeared 4x in my campaign so they kinda figured I like Trolls. And ofc the reason I like them is that they can be different types because Trolls can basically gain the abilities of whatever they eat.

If I could make a suggestion, raise the camera up a little and zoom in slightly to crop out the floor. I see it as the only flaw in an otherwise nice set. If you're keen on having the floor in the shot, move away the cables and bags :-) Also, are there any episodes for necromancy planned? Not sure if you saw my last message.

Why does nobody feel like summoning elementals is ok but not undead? Elementals are literally mortal spirits that are bound to an element. Undead are the exact same thing except they're bound to the material plane instead the elemental ones...
@chaddixon9764
@chaddixon9764 7 жыл бұрын
QCreyton Actually according to the MM elementals have a life of their own, no mortal soul required. It's why they have their own plane on which they live etc.
@thefracturedbutwhole5475

I would question how the necromancy works before dismissing it, do you keep the soul from moving on or force it back into its corpse and force it to serve you or do you simply pour your magic into an otherwise dead creature giving it the appearance of "life" . . . trapping and enslaving a soul is definitely evil, reanimating a dead creatures body with magic is still messed up but isn't evil and elementals have a 'dim consciousness' and 'little sense of being' (according to the MM anyway) they can only take form when focused by magic, using necromancy is a bit more questionable than other schools of magic but depending on how it works there is next to no difference between conjuring an elemental and creating a zombie (an elemental probably has more of a sense of self than the soulless corpse off Jeff the zombie swordsman)
@QCreyton
@QCreyton 7 жыл бұрын
Chad-Solomon Dixon their ecology is that they are mortal souls that never fully passed on but instead merged with a portion of the elemental chaos along the way. all they are is a mortal soul animating a different type of body. if they'd merged with the ethereal plane they'd be a ghost instead.

So for the adventure idea you threw out there about getting a fire weapon (and specifically against trolls) like...how long of an adventure would that be? I mean youve brought up going on quests to get magical items but it doesnt seem worth it when magic exists...why go on this long perilous journey to create a magic weapon..when by level 5 your wizard/sorcerer can just start slinging fireballs. It seems like enchanted weapons of various types seem pretty useless when theyre only needed against pretty strong enemies that even with the weapon youd be too weak to fight, and by the time its safe to fight well then you dont need the item!
