May not be a romantic thing, but you really do feel that Sherlock and Watson love each other in this series.

Well, that depends on what your definition of “romantic” ;) This is probably one of the most meaningful things Sherlock could do to show his love and admiration for her. You are 110% correct :)

This was such a sweet, loving gesture...meaningful on multiple levels: Bees are the heraldic symbol of the royal line of the Merovingians and also (in European culture at least) associated with loyalty, hard work and diligence. They are also essential to human survival (pollination of crops) and literally make life sweeter by producing honey. So this could really be seen as a true declaration of love (platonic, romantic, whatever) of Sherlock to Joan...

Not only that, but in the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novels, Sherlock became a beekeeper after he retired. (Bees were important to him)

Despite all appearances, Holmes does care about Watson and very deeply so. Being as extraordinary a person as Holmes is, his ways of showing it are equally extraordinary. Such a fitting end to such a gripping season! This moment always gives me goosebumps!

You guys know that Sherlock has been studying bees and writing books about them right? And despite how rude he was to Joan from the start -which he’s changed now- but he actually named a new species of bee after Joan! To Sherlock, he yielded a life time of opportunity for Joan! This scene is indeed one of my favorites 😄

One problem with scene: A queen bee can get pregnant with multiple drones and she does this during a mating flight. There is literally no way to confirm those new workers are the offspring of that single drone.

Good point. And Osmia bees are pretty distantly related from honey bees. Closely related species can sometimes have hybrid offspring, but bees from separate families wouldn't be able to reproduce.

@SkyeJulieta4 жыл бұрын
unless Sherlock already had the queen and he was the only drone she came into contact with
@NateSean4 жыл бұрын
@@SkyeJulieta Assuming you're right, he would have to remember which hive that queen came from because if he reintroduced her to the wrong one the hive would kill her. But assuming he controlled the circumstances and got the queen successfully mated and she did in fact lay eggs in that (clearly) well established hive the hybrid bee is a drone and it would die after mating. If the queen only mated once it would limit the number of eggs she laid, thus triggering the bees to kill her and raise new queens. As distracted as Sherlock had been in the intervening episodes, I'm doubtful those cells would be that distinctive.
@dunnybrush Жыл бұрын
I’d assumed that Sherlock had engineered a mating flight, somehow. I thought that the queen is inseminated with a lifetime supply during the mating flight, so she’d produce that offspring for some time. (Drones and workers, at her choice). Sherlock could split the colony at the next swarm season and propagate new colonies from there. But they would all be mongrels from that point onwards, though, as he started the new species colony from a single bee, so he’d have to choose what to breed the second generation with.
