Elena Obraztsova - Aida - Judgement Scene

She had the LOUDEST and most beautiful voice I ever heard "live" (and I have heard Crespin, Farrell, Tebaldi, Cossoto and Nilsson--all huge-voiced singers) at a Tucker gala in the late 1970's. She was not on the program but they announced her as a guest and she walked onstage with Eve Queler who accompanied her at the piano (without any sheet music! Brava, Eve!), and blew everyone away with Dalila's Mon coeur. We just couldn't believe our ears. The recordings never captured it, and even this clip doesn't capture it. Her voice was TITANIC.

Is that all you've got to say? I'll speak for myself. I am infatuated. And I want her right by my side when I go to court, either secular or religious. And I might hide behind her skirts. But yours was a good story, and I am grateful. It's just that I can't keep myself from thinking of her as this magnificent, yet also flawed by jealousy and rage, Egyptian princess. I wish I could do something--- anything!--- to help her out.

I had happlness to listen to Elena for at least 20 times. Every time even when she wasn't in her best vocal or physical form it was FANTASTIC! I adore her personality and her dramatic talent! Even now listening to her tragic singing I feel tears on my eyes. R. I. P. I, m proud to be her neighbour in St. Petersburg.

She is truly wonderful - a vocal giant as well as an artistic one. But it is her spectacular musicality that is most impressive. What does it matter if you have a gorgeous voice if artistic and musical integrity is missing? She and Shirley Verrett are my two top favorites (of many!) in the mezzo field. @@mary_arthistory From memoires of Galina Vishevskaya and Tamara Sinyavskaya. The former wrote that Obrazcova was snitching to the Communist party and the latter described the case when Elena used her connections to remove Tamara from her role in Prince Igor when Bolshoi toured in France. Interestingly, Galina was a Obrazcova's benefactor and sponsor where as Tamara was her closest friend. Tamara forgave her having a heart of gold....

Underrated and unappreciated by whom? Ceertainly not those of us whosaw her '76 Amneris. She ruined the role for everyone who sang it afterwards. The NYC audiences went wild. (I never saw an ovation like thatone.) and so did thecritics! Unfortunately her American Career was cut short by the Cold War and the voice did not record well on most of her commercial recordings. But NO Ma'am. We knew what we had in her!!!

The very finest Amneris of the last 50 years without question. You had to see her in the early days at the Met before the dirctors got to her. The huge MET stage was simply not large enough to contain her. Strengths. Notice the canvernous low notes, the broad solid middle ones and the powerful dreamatic high notes. SHE was the toast of the town. I'll never see or hear another Amneris without thinking of that second Amneris at the MET Her Amneris equalled Norman's Cassandre.

For me there is no better Amneris than Rita Gorr but this Obraztsova is still amazing. Such power in her voice makes me tremble. She is one of the best. Her Contess in Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur has no rival.

Completamente d'accordo con lei, quanto rimpiango di non poter vedere un'Amneris così a teatro, capace di trasmettere emozioni e dramma e non solo di emettere note. Ho questa Aida completa ed è veramente stupenda, con Maria Chiara, Martinucci, Siepi, tranne che per la ripresa, a volte un po' troppo scura e statica, che non permette spesso di cogliere la recitazione dei cantanti(sopratutto della Obratzsova nella prima scena e in questa) e la messa in scena di Mauro Bolognini, un po'(troppo) senza fascino e neutra, con la scelta senza senso, ad esempio, di non far comparire nel finale del 3 atto, Ramphis, Amneris e i sacerdoti, per arrestare Radamès che rimane solo sul palcoscenico!

Your opinion is just as good as any other's. I happen to love this voice. I can, however understand what you mean about her rough sound and heavy chest voice. I must however disagree with your statement about her line. She does indeed have legato line. If you havent already lissen to her recital on youtube. this may not sway your opinion about her but one cannot say that she doesn't have line.

I was at her Met debut in '76 as Amnerisan absolute freak of naturesuch incomparable power, such intensity, the ovation after this scene was indescribable. Only Zajick comes close (with all due respect to Cossotto, Verrett, and Bumbry). But I don't think she ever again reached that summit, though her Marfa was great in its own right

Obraztsova is certainly a worthy rival to Cossotto in this role; Elena's voice is bigger and just as dramatic. Cossotto is more polished.

Косотто не хватало страсти, она пела красиво, думала о технике пения, но не жила на сцене, в отличие от Образцовой. Сила страсти и сила перевоплощения на сцене и отличает Елену ото всех остальных. Есть голоса более красивые, чем у Елены, но им не хватает жизни.
