@TONY DO BRONX it's probably because Cyprus didn't had the best reputation in the years before 2012. 2008, 2009, 2011...cannot exactly be called great songs. So the transition from that to La la love almost went unnoticed due people expecting just the worst from Cyprus (except for Sweden, they gave us 12 points). It still became a success after ESC anyway. What Cyprus did from 2015 onwards though was quite smart. It started sending decent entries, slowly building to a generally great player, putting itself on the radar so fans could finally start considering it for a win. It happened first time with Fuego and the expectations are only high since then.
