Elephant Ajabu was born way too early, her mother won't let her drink

Nog geen maand na de geboorte van het eerste Afrikaanse olifanten kalf Mosi geboren op 04-11-2023, is in Safaripark Beekse Bergen een tweede kalfje geboren.
Zondagavond 03-12-2023 rond 23.15 uur kwam het gezonde 2e vrouwtje met de naam Ajabu ter wereld.
Ajabu drinkt niet of nauwelijks bij haar moeder maar drinkt bij haar tante, de moeder van Mosi of haar oma die ook zwanger is.
Ondertussen drinkt Ajabu geregeld bij mama Bongi.
Dat is ook de reden dat de stal veel gesloten is, ook heeft Ajabu een navelstreng ontsteking opgelopen waardoor het niet al te goed ging in het begin. (info van een medewerker)

Certainly, she is doing well now, the mother had an umbilical cord infection, which has been treated, both young already drank from the other two females, but now also from the mother, they both grow very well and gain weight well, this really due to the good care of the zoo keepers

normally an elephant is pregnant for around 22 months before the baby is born. Ajabu was born before that time. so shes premature.

@@toyadawson2923 it depends on the baby. Humans can be born prematurly too. At the last stage of pregnancy all the baby has to do is grow. Usually the organs are all ready and grown. (Some animals like horses cant survive a premature birth because the longes havent develloped fully) it could have been that the mother didnt have (enough) milk yet to feed the baby. There could be plenty of reasons why the mother wouldnt let her drink at first. It also depends on the reason why the mother wont let the baby drink. In this case the baby was allowed to drink with her aunt (who gave birth before her mother) and her grandmother (who is pregnant too) afterwards mom allowed the baby to drink. but it really depends on the situation.

@@toyadawson2923 being premature all depends on how long a pregnancy usually last and at what time the baby is born. A few days earlier of later might have made a lot of difference. If you want to learn more. Look up the video "animals in the womb" on youtube. They follow a pregnancy of a dog, elephant and dolphin i believe. Its very interesting
