Hello from south USA, I have been growing elephant garlic for about 15 years, The bulbs came from a friends house where they grew in his yard and we trace those back about 50 years. I have permanent beds of E.G. Areas where I just let it grow year round. I mulch it, and fertilize it and if need, water it, and some years, I neglect it. But I don't plant it. From Bulblet to bulb to mature plant takes two growing seasons. I cut the blooms off the mature plants, so when I harvest I can tell which to pull out of the ground. If the plant has bulblets I stick the right back in the hole, next spring they will make a small plant (no bloom) with a bulb. Leave in the ground for another growing season and it will make a plant that flowers and has cloves. I am down about latitude 30 degrees so my garlic sprouts in late October and harvest about end of May. Growing in the same spot year after year, they say is bad due to disease issues. So I grow in different places in the yard, on the south side of stumps, fences, or in the lawn. If a disease issue comes up I won't lose all the garlic. But I have a spot that has been growing garlic for 15 years, at least. Try picking a spot and l planting a few cloves or bulblet or two and just leave it two years. It will keep coming back. The bulblets will definetly grow, stick a few in a large pot and and just leave outside, when they are ready some will sprout. I have heard of old abandon properties where E. garlic has been growing on its own for 100 years. I sure would like to get a few bulbs/cloves of that.

My garlic (Primor variety) grew as big as the elephant garlic so I'm delighted because it's the first time I managed to grow it successfully. It was producing flower shoots as well so I've plenty of garlic scapes chopped up and frozen for use in cooking. Can't beat free food 👍😁

Hello, I have never grown the elephant garlic yet. Now I do grow hardneck garlic in US Minnesota Zone 4A. I tie the same varieties together in braids. The ones that look like they may not store well I take them and peel and thinly slice the garlic. I put them in the dehydrator and dry them O U T S I D E never dry garlic in the house. Then I grind all the pieces in the blender and have garlic powder for the next year. The other ones I can use as fresh and use the powder in the recipes that it works well in. None ever goes to waste. Next year I will try the elephant garlic. I have also used the scapes in making a garlic pesto to freeze in olive oil. Let me know if you have any other ideas of questions for me. God bless take care be safe bye for now Steve

Lots of good ideas. I will dehydrate some, I think. We have a shed outside that I can put the dehydrator in. I know the house will reek of garlic if I do it there! 😂

When my grandparent's place was going to be sold I dug some elephant garlic that my Grandmother had planted years before. There were loads of the little "bulbules" attached to the main bulb and I did chuck them in the ground to see what would happen. I don't know that any of them grew. I love elephant garlic~~so tasty! Love the frozen garlic scape idea! Your sheep and goats are adorable! Looks like things are nice on your homestead this summer!

Thanks Michele. Elephant garlic is tasty. Mild compared to ordinary garlic, so you can use more without fear of being overpowered by it. The garden is finally starting to grow nicely now that we’re getting a warm spell. Hope you have a productive season ❤️

Wow! they look amazing 🙂I pulled mine yesterday, I'm happy with them, but i think i did a boo boo starting them off in the tunnel and not planting out until Jan, straight in the ground this year for me! I just dont think it got cold enough in Yorkshire. Take care, thank you for sharing

I grew about 12 in the polytunnel and they seemed to be fine, but we had several cold and frosty days over winter and spring, so I think that helped.

I believe the bulbils need to be chilled before they will sprout. That may explain why they will sprout when left out for the winter in ground. try putting them in the fridge for a few weeks...

a guy on yt put those corms in a bucket with moist soil or some medium and put a lid on the bucket, kind of a bigger baggy metode, left it in the garage and chect ones in a wile that the medium didnt dry out, and he sayd that it tok about 8mnd to them start doing somthing, and was ready to plant out. this gave him a better survival prosent, i dont remember if he gave them a littel cut in the skin, like nipp of the topp\pointy end, with a nail klipper or a god skissor, but i have seen others do that, the shell\skin can be wery hard, or so i understand on my reaserch on yt:) growing elephants for the first time, and so far i have only seen one green sprout were the cloves was plantet, so its a god chance the norwegian winter got`em:) looks like ooerprei do better in my area

Great video hun. Just a little tip, if you put the separated garlic cloves in a jar and half fill it, pop the lid on and shake it ... the papers fall off. Saves a whole heap of work xox

Hi Anna, I planted my elephant garlic the same time as the regular garlic- in October. I’ve planted it later than that, too, anytime from October to December. Our sheep looked different after their haircuts don’t you think? 😉

Bulbils take 2 seasons to get a bulb. Find a area you can let them grow up in this fall and through next year. Next fall lift them, space them out and let grow on.in next year. I did not have super large bulbs but they eat😂
