Elephant Huddles & Hierarchies

Adine films close up moments with Klaserie and Setombe, who are quickly joined by Limpopo, Fishan and Timisa, Khanyisa and Kumbura under the shade of a tree 💕 Carer Owen shares insight into the latest hierarchy in the herd, which starts with dominant bull Sebakwe and continues with Jabulani, Fishan, Somopane, Zindoga, Mambo, Setombe, Tokwe and Lundi, Limpopo, Bubi and Klaserie. The other elephants are not vying for a place in the hierarchy yet, that is Kumbura, Pisa, Timisa and Khanyisa.
Hierarchy in elephant herds is always in flux, and what we are seeing over time is the rising of Zindoga and Mambo who have dominated Setombe and the other cows now.
Elephants are well-known for their close family ties and social complexity. As Elephants Voices describes it, elephants “live in a fluid fission-fusion society with relationships radiating out from the mother-offspring bond through families, bond groups, clans, independent males and beyond to strangers.”

I'm still in awe over when Adine grazed her knee. The elephants knew something happened. Had to sniff out the problem. Each and every one had to have their turn sniffing to make sure she was OK. Then tried to comfort her in their elephant way.

Oh, to stand among this beautiful, blended family. Adine and the Carers are so lucky to have them as trusted friends. Handsome Fishan the brave survivor. Still an important part of the herd. Each elephant greets Adine as a member of the family. I love that they spend so much time close to each other.

I was fortunate enough to be able to see "Diary of an Elephant Orphan" at the Chesapeake Film Festival. What a beautiful film! The whole audience fell in love with Khanyisa and the herd, shed tears when Mopane died and again when Khanyisa and Lundi were distressed at being separated. Everyone gasped in horror when Khanyisa stopped breathing during a medical procedure--and then laughed when she started breathing again and Adine told her to stop holding her breath. And the footage of Khanyisa, so tiny and vulnerable and so badly injured, riding to the orphanage in the back of Adine's car was just heart-wrenching. The film won Best Environmental Documentary, and that honor is all deserved. Absolutely wonderful!

Explanations about the way elephants interact are fascinating. Nothing static about a herd. Naturally, as bulls get old and less powerful, their status will be superseded (pretty much the same generally in the animal and human world). Hearing this confirmed concerning "our" herd of elephants makes this more personal and interesting. ❤

In the human world, there is evidence for status change, like getting a new job as a manager, or not being the baby of the family anymore. But I find it hard to see what the consequences are of the promotions or demotions in the herd.

It is absolutely no surprise that Somopane is challenging Fishan. Somopane is healthy, one of the oldest, most experienced bulls, with an outstanding sense like his above average sense of smell. Regardless, of course I also feel sorry for Fishan.

This herd's dynamics are different from the usual ones because the bulls are still part of the herd. In the wild, they would have most likely struck out on their own or with other bulls.

What a cute video! Setombe seems to be doing very well and surely so grateful to have the love of her ever-loyal daughter, Klaserie. It's a bond that is unbreakable. The huddle was adorable and Meisiekind, our birthday girl was in a good mood after receiving all those greetings from all over the world. It fascinates me how Limpopo and Klaserie could be ocassionally sparring, but elephant behaviors as we are learning-are very fluid. One thing I know is that the HERD is so united and that Khanyisa and Timisa as the youngest are thriving! They all love Adine's and Stavros'/Carers gentle voices and trunk rubs!

0:48 from greeting Klaserie to suddenly surrounded by three adult elephants, Adine (and Owen?) are up, close and personal to dry twig munching elephants. 😯good thing these giants are so very careful in their movements, not just where they tread but how their head moves with the tusks or what the trunk does. even when an animal has no malice in it they could cause unintentional accidents simply due to their size and power. e.g. rhinos are extremely shortsighted and therefore 'skittish' as long as they don't identify something by other means (e.g. by scent) as harmless. if you are part of a lion pride you are safe from being prey but that doesn't mean you don't get tackled and suffer scratches even if the lion acts extra careful around you knowing how feeble you are. 🤕 elephants seem more like whales. they have very good control over all their movements and you can consider yourself quite safe around them. accidental injuries seem very rare. maybe the carers of HERD can add some of their experiences. do they suffer injuries when interacting with the herd? 😗
