I appreciate you making dedicated builds for linux, not enough people doing that! Too bad nobara was having so many issues. I've been having a lot of issues with Mint 22, works wonderfully on my laptop for work stuff but my desktop constant issues with compatibility. Still haven't delved into lutris and such.

Yeah I was on Nobara as well. Running Fedora 41 instead, less issues. Nobara seemed to break things with every update so I gave up. People can use the 7900XTX instead (what I have) it works flawless on open source drivers, kinda THE point of running Linux and performs within 10% of the 4080 in games for slightly less money.

Sad you had so many issues with Nobara. Been using it for about two years now on my laptop and about a year on my gaming PC (R5 3600 + RTX 2060). The only issues I've had are some SDDM (login screen) problems. It's totally worth a shot if you just want to install and go for gaming but, as with anything under the sun, it's not gonna be perfect for everyone.

Great video, man. There is one thing I'd love the whole world to know about, though. You do NOT need to set your USB drives as first choice in boot sequence menu in the BIOS. There is already a separate button for JUST the boot menu (search it for your specific manufacturer, or the first boot screen will tell you about it) where you can choose your USB without making it the default from BIOS, installing the system, and going back again into the BIOS to make the internal SSD as the default option. It's crazy that I've never seen a single KZbinr mention this. Lol

I like to leave USB as default first selection, so when I want to I don't need to go into the bios. I'm aware it's a security issue for public machines.

I've tried Intel and Nvidia builds in the past few weeks and seems like most problems with rendering issues (games, editing, 3d) are still due to Nvidia drivers in linux. Big sad

Strange issues with Nobara, wonder if that's down to how new the GPU is. I have a 3060 TI and had no issues with Resolve whatsoever. Resolve is only really compatible with Enterprise Linux anyway, so you might have a tough time running it outside of a container a-la Davincibox with newer hardware. I don't game on my Nobara system (it's mostly to run server software/do batch rendering) anyway, I'd use Bazzite for that. What Nobara has been good for is running Wine forks. Got the entire Affinity suite running on Nobara flawlessly. All in all, it seems like Nobara is moreso GE's testbed rather than a stable distro (that's why updates seem to break so often). This results in newer, more expensive hardware and AMD stuff being left as a second class citizen. It's rough around the edges simply because it's a one man show, but other than that I applaud the effort, as it's a one man show that's more then just a skin of another distro. It adds something valuable to the community beyond good looks.

Honestly, I haven't bothered with any patches for games or the OS when it comes to Linux. The only time I've dabbled with it was when trying to get Wallpaper Engine working of all things. Otherwise, Linux Mint and Manjaro have both worked fine on my gaming laptop.

Glad you showed off Nobara. Ill try it out myself sometime Its frustrating to hear Nvidea still drags its feet for Linux. I hope Intel becomes a high-end dGPU maker, and Nvidea decides to go into CPUs. Have em fight amongst themselves a bit more, get us consumers a better deal

Nice build, as you said ITX system builds are tough. I'm curious if the system power profile was set to "performance" during the gaming tests? Possibly leading to some of the lower game performance? I do not recall seeing the lighting bolt icon in the task bar in any of the blank desktop video.
@ElevatedSystems

It was. I tested in performance, balanced, PBO on and off, disabled SMT, verified core powers and frequencies. I even did some overclocking and undervolting. Nothing got performance even close to Windows.

@@ElevatedSystems If you're not keen on Nobara, I'd say you can try CachyOS. I'm watching a guy here on KZbin A1RM4X, he's daily driving Linux on his R9 5950X + RTX 5090 and does a lot of testing of different OSs, kernels and such, for gaming. Certainly knows his stuff. And he recommends CachyOS.

I really hope MSI continues the Expert line for the 5000 series. Its a great looking card and would be perfect for anyone trying do a niche build like Optimum Techs build with the 3d printed air ducts to optimize the cooling in a way that would be much more difficult with anything other than something like a founder edition or the MSI Expert line since at least to my knowledge those were pretty much the only 2 lines of 4000 series that were both aesthetically pleasing and that had the unique fan design

i have been running nixOS (and previously arch) on multiple systems with both nvidia and AMD, the performance is usually relatively close to windows and occasionally slightly better in games. for servers there is obviously no comparison, no one should use windows on servers...

Interesting, i'm daily running Nobara for half a year already since it's the only linux build i've tried that worked on my hardware out of the box, mainly Suspend, Davinci Resolve and gaming (it's an old Nvidia 1060 ) . All other systems just couldn't work with my card and Nobara just does it, and my FPS is 10-20% higher and smoother than on Windows, which I wiped out long ago
