Those touch buttons go back even farther. My home town had a 1880's era dept. store that replaced there 1910-1920's manual otis elevators in the early to mid 60's, with automatic otis' with those buttons. As a child, I was fascinated with the "magic" of those buttons.

We used to have sensitive touch buttons at Weill Cornell Medical Center in NYC until about 1997 when the elevators were modernized. Of all in the complex, when I left in 2010, one elevator still had these and got away from being modernized.
@REWYRED13 жыл бұрын
I remember those!..There were a few buildings in the city I live in that had those style buttons, mind you this was going back to the late 70's and early 80's... Not sure if they are still around in those buildings or if they have been replaced.

☑️ Touch-sensitive. ☑️ Vintage. ☑️ Bell chime. ☑️ Intelligent/Classic levelling.
I will (possibly) send a lift/elevator video at King's Court Apartments, Ramsey, Isle of Man of the 2 1975 OTIS lifts on Saturday 3rd August 2013 for his 202nd birthday. The lifts are traction, though very small. The lifts go at aproximately 2m/s (2 meters per second) :)

It's possible that this is still using cold-cathode "touch button" tubes such as the 2040. These tubes have a plate which is capacitively coupled to the tube's anode. It's rather interesting how these devices work...
@jeanmariemorin6 жыл бұрын
they are "cold cathode thyratrons" the surface of the tube is metallized and primer the tube with respect to the earth brought to a potential of about 250 v ~

Better hurry. They are sadly all disappearing due to ADA laws and other codes.
@upanddownadventures8 жыл бұрын
John Kinder As far as I know, these touch sensitive buttons are not required to be replaced (but some technicians might want to replace them, partly for those reasons), unless something changed recently. These touch sensitive buttons are very rare and becoming even rarer though. I know of a building that had these fixtures that is modernizing their elevators.
@addman278 жыл бұрын
You're preaching to the choir.The buttons are neat, and as a kid I was fascinated with them. In fact you can sometimes light them up by breathing on them (the vapor in your breath trips the circuit). A few things to consider though as I worked in the industry. They are not ADA compliant which in 1990 became the law. If a person say in a wheel chair couldn't reach the button and no one was around to press it, it was a problem. And even if a disabled person hit the touch button with say a cane, it wouldn't activate because those touch buttons work by your finger (that has tiny amounts of electrical currents running through it) acting as a ground to 'complete' the circuit and activate the button (there's a vacuum tube behind the button). The tubes alone (while cool), are expensive and not as reliable or practical as the typical boring solid state buttons of today. If you notice when they do modernize these buttons they usually put a long metal plate with the buttons on the bottom of the plate, to cover the original opening and place the buttons at a much lower height to accommodate the disabled. This has nothing to do with what technicians want (or don't want) to do. Also, the reason these were discontinued in the 70's in the first place was because they were deemed a fire hazard. Sometimes when a building is being modernized you can score an old touch button plate (like the one I have) as a cool souvenir of the past. It's just progress (like it or not). A lot of stuff from the 60's (like cars for instance) were cool for their time, but newer cars are far more reliable. safe, and more practical than the ones from the 60's and that's what most people of today want. The same applies for elevators. I'm sure though a few touch button elevators will remain around for a while.
@upanddownadventures8 жыл бұрын
John Kinder I think in most cases non-ADA compliant elevators are not required to be upgraded to ADA compliant if they were installed before 1990. But that is a reason that building owners might want to modernize them. Do you know if the touch buttons were deemed a fire hazard because of the fire at the old MGM Grand in Las Vegas? I have heard the fire did activate the touch buttons that the elevators there had. After the black touch buttons were discontinued, in the mid-late 1980s, a few other types of touch buttons (most likely a type considered safer) were starting to be produced, but they were discontinued in the United States in 1990 because of ADA.
