An unedited live video recording of ELF cruising in a down pouring rain. I wanted to demonstrate that you can stay dry inside the ELF but I was mistaken. This was during a heavy thunderstorm (9/21/16) creating flood on the streets. I screamed several times of hitting major water pools splashing under my seat. My bottom of my pants were totally wet. Then I'd forgotten about my neighbor's brick wall around its mailbox a flower bed. Watch and enjoy.

Here is what I find interesting. Even a person driving a car is going to get wet because s/he has to get out and walk to the door. The Elf can park anywhere a bike can. That includes close to the door, or even under the awning. Plus avoid puddles like even car drivers do. But perhaps thats even the fun of it! Being in touch with nature just a little more, is the rain all that bad? Will it kill you? Maybe we are too addicted to luxuries we have lost all tolerance of anything natural.

It clearly needs wheelwells, fenders, mudguards - call 'em what you want but this vehicle should not be shipped without them
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 7 жыл бұрын
It has wheel wells and fenders. They just need little 4 x 14 inch additions inside to block spray during turns. I made mine in 10 minutes. Then we hit a drought and after 2 months still no rain to test it. The 2 seat version also has side floor panels, I made my own with sheet aluminum, no big deal. In all cases you stay much dryer in this than you could hope for on any open bike.

I saw in another video a ELF owner put custom wheel wells on the inside to deflect road spray. The PEBL already has wheel wells for the front wheels, the ELF should too.

$8,000.00? Ounce for ounce, function for function, these bikes are so ridiculously overpriced compared to conventional automobiles it's just silly. People are never just going to "do the right thing" and drive alternative electric vehicles like these until a Chinese factory is cranking them out for $800 bucks unfortunately.

Way to take one for the team. It's clear the Elf is an improvement over riding a regular bike in the rain. But its not a miracle machine. Most of the time conditions won't be that bad. That's why cars have become as expensive as a house (or at least a sizeable trailer), they cover all the extreme driving conditions.

rainx would work. I live in Seattle, I would need full doors and enclosed floor pan. No way can you stay dry in this thing. No shock absorberz it seems either. So, with areas a lot of rain, long cold weather it would need to be more sealed.
@kblewis3331
@kblewis3331 8 жыл бұрын
Rain-X is not recommended for use on the type plastic the windshield is made of. It will cause it to yellow and deteriorate sooner. Carnauba wax is recommended. There are "side Shields" that one ELF owner has designed and makes and sells to other ELF owners. Most folks find ways to divert the water with inside fenders for the wheels. And folks in Maine & MN drive ELFs year round. Due to the shell and dressing appropriately they stay sufficiently warm.
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 8 жыл бұрын
Rainx for glass has alcohol that will damage the windshield. The rainx formulation for plastic sucks. Carnauba wax works fine. I was a Seattle bike commuter, I know of one now that uses the ELF on the BG trail a lot. He does not use doors. When you are moving the rain flies past the openings and maybe your elbows get wet. Beats the heck out of a total soaking you get on a regular bike.

Seattle ELFers use carnauba wax. We do not get wet, doors are not needed and they cause bad window fogging since you are exercising inside. Rain just blows by. Rain does not fall up so no floor needed.

@@popeyegordonAnd you're lucky enough to be able to cope without a car. Many people don't have that option, whether due to distance, time constraints, having a family, transporting people and belongings etc. If you can only afford one vehicle... you have to choose the one that does what you need. These ELFs were expensive, and you can get a good bike or trike for less, to use when you don't need to use the car.

The Elf is begging for a floorboard, a fully enclosed lower portion, to be anything but a fair-weather, light-raining vehicle. (Maybe someone will create and offer an after-market kit? Or a future ELF model will be enclosed?) And I say this as someone who has been wanting one after researching these a lot. I seriously like the ELF and the company and its founder. I think the ELF has so much going for it. This video though, confirms what I've been suspecting, from the little bit I could see of the lower interior of the ELF in various other pics and videos previously. It's too exposed underneath, and combined with the low seat recumbent bike positioning, the rider is close to the wet ground, as this video illustrates so well. I saw on youtube another very similar vehicle out (when I find the name, I'll add), that was not yet ready for the general public, but initially out for city fleet rentals. It had a completely sealed lower interior, and the pedals were still down there and functioning. It also had full, closeable doors. I'm sure it is/will be more expensive than the ELF. In the ELF it's apparent that you need full waterproof boots and rain pants to ride during a rain, and a parka in the cold thereby limiting its year-round usage.
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 6 жыл бұрын
No you need the ventilation. The 2 seater ELF has inner side boards too. Enclosing the pedals would put a housing within 2 inches of the pavement. The PEBL is a bit of a flop. Too hot, under powered.
@another3997

As an alternative to a conventional bike or trike, surely even the most basic of body shell is an improvement? You won't get as wet, your face won't be pummelled and if you wear specs, you won't be blind. 😁 From the look of it, a small adaptation could help alleviate getting a wet backside, even simple diy ones.

I really really like this ELF bike or trike (3 wheels) but at that price he could add some internal wheel wells to divert water. Also how come theirs no optional side doors of some kind for moderate to heavy rains. It definitely could use some shocks on the rear tire frame to soak up the rougher terrain. All in all very nice. I wouldn't mind an extra 10 mph.

Sadly, a fact I recently learned, that in the USA the limit for electric bike NON assisted is 20 mpi. With assist it can go faster as even a standard bike can travel that speed. Thinking about the price it cost nothing more after purchase (like other bikes), Gives more range than a standard bike to the average person, allows for far more carry capacity, which all adds up to a lot of gas savings if you purchase this for local runs to the store. Get some exercise to boot. Hopefully with the new types of batteries coming out like sodium, or the Zinc Bromide some of the cost will be reduced. OH! plus the battery can come out to charge in the house for that horrid rainy day :)

The ele could use a windshield wiper, sliding doors for ran protection, a loud car type sound horn for better protection against cars, wider back wheel for better balance. The Elfe could also use a floor it dose not have to be perfect cause the Elfe is a bicycle, but for better protection against water puddles on rainy days. Stronger disc brakes, Stronger rimes, bigger head lights for safety at night with turning signals, brake light would be nice for lane changes bike are also entitled to share the road. Nic invention. Good bike.
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 4 жыл бұрын
No. Wipers ruin plastic windshields. Most of us keep a coat of carnauba wax on our windshields which lets water bead and roll off. That is good enough for a top speed of 20 mph. Two door styles are available but few owners want them, we have to exercise in that small space and the windows would fog. ELF does come with a loud electric horn. Just because Doug did not need to use it that is not evidence of having no horn. We do not want a floor either, we need that ventilation and we know that the pedals bring our heels within 2 inches of the pavement. You sure make up lots of nonsense, the three disk brakes are very powerful, enough to handle a 550 pound payload! The ELF *ALREADY HAS* stronger rims, full DOT lighting system with signals and headlights so bright that cars flash at us.

You can still rent a car when needed but the ELF saves me $3000/yr compared to car costs and I get vital exercise at my desired pace. Only the most strong downpours get you damp inside the ELF. How can a roof, front panel and fenders not keep you far dryer than a regular bicycle? In most rain my elbows get damp, nothing more. If it was sealed up we would get soaked in our own sweat and the windows would fog up.

PEBL outsourced to Germany last year. ELF went under during the pandemic but is still likely to make a comeback. Doug is going out in hard rain on purpose to show how dry you can stay in the ELF. @popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 4 жыл бұрын
That is a lie. We have a full roof and windshield and the shell design channels rain away from the doors. What is ridiculous is assuming you know what you are talking about. We need maximum ventilation to stay cool and prevent window fogging. There is no engine powered defogger. Rain goes down, not up. You are clueless that the pedals bring your heels within 2 inches of the pavement. That's ridiculous.

@@stevemccormack9948 My comments stand unchallenged. I biked in rainy Washington state for a decade. I got soaked a lot. The moment I saw the first image of an ELF I was sold. YOU posted a caustic insult first about a design you do not understand and have never ridden at all, especially not in the rain. The huge ELF owners group on Facebook has owners all over the US. This includes owners in Seattle and Bellingham who have posted KZbin videos. In rainy climates we can do one of two things - slow down before hitting a puddle to avoid splashing, or just install a little 4 by 10 inch scrap of vinyl at the inside rear edge of the fender wells. Mine took 10 minutes. Sealing off the underbody is a ridiculous waste of vehicle weight that will slow you down and let you get too hot in that small space. Your heels come within 2 inches of the pavement so a floor won't work. The competing PEBL design is seeing complaints from owners of getting too hot even in winter because of the closed off floor. The windows fog too easily. The Seattle commuter bought the door kit for his ELF because he goes regardless of rain. He added the little fender extensions but does not need the doors most of the year and the worst that can happen is our elbows get wet. I don't have a viewpoint, I have six solid years of daily experience. Ask owners before casting arbitrary accusations of a poor design.

When I was videotaping, I was holding an iPhone with my left hand which may explain the jerkiness of this video. Soon l will get a iPhone holder installed on the ELF so I can keep both my hands on the handlebar. I also plan to do more videotaping in spring '17 to demonstrate that I do stay dry during moderate rain (and myself to show how dry I really am). Of course, not perfectly dry but that far far better than soaking wet on a bicycle. Thanks for the comment.

Plastic windshields are not compatible with wipers. We wax the windshield with carnauba wax. Rain-x for glass will ruin plastic windshields. The ELF design is safer than any open bike or trike. The shell provides crumple zone protection from all directions. Of the 5 known car collisions that happened with 900 ELFs on the road and 3 million road miles logged there have been no operator injuries to date. Teens should not be allowed to cruise in cars, they should be limited to ELF type vehicles, problem solved.
