In that same era of post up centers getting phased out,point guards who can't shoot or self create on a high level were also getting phased out.I call point guards like this eric snows meaning they were good defenders and could run a offense but they couldn't shoot to save their life.

I always compare him to Rondo if he had been put in a winning team position I think he’d be better than we thought he would’ve been. The Magic were in a never ending rebuild so I don’t think it’s his fault, I believe franchises didn’t have enough faith in him
@33greenleaf22 сағат бұрын
I always compared him to Jason Kidd.
@sirjohnlegion269121 сағат бұрын
And Rondo was never a shooter but what he did have was a floater game and was an efficient finisher at the cup for a good number of years in his prime. Payton wasn't even efficient enough in the paint.

Rondo was clutch, he was not giving you much offense in November, but get into the playoffs and he could become a two way dominant stud when needed.

At this point it’s safe to say unless you can shoot or be a reasonable shooting threat it’s pretty much over for you starting in the nba yet alone staying on a roster. When I think of starting point guards who are good at what he does they all either learned how to shoot or got left out of the league. The only exception so far is if you are a big playmaker like Simmons, but even then he might get pushed out himself. 😅
@tribalypredisposed16 сағат бұрын
Yeah, pretty much today if you want to be an NBA starter and get paid, you have to shoot 35% or better from three, no matter size or position you are. Teams cannot afford to have a guy defenders can sag off on the floor for most the game.

That Payton and Oladipo duo was supposed to be that backcourt of the future for Orlando. Or it seemed like that was the expectation at the time, considering both were lotto picks in back2back drafts. One of the biggest what ifs from that decade to me is; What becomes of the magic if Payton develops a J and Victor sticks around longer and stays healthy?
@normanrodriguez667021 сағат бұрын
I truly believe a lack of a 3-point shot hurt Payton too.

Jimmer Fredette had a breakout game on a bad team in 2014 and still got waived. It's a combination of bad teams not having an identity and the doubt about okay players possibly putting up empty stats.

I think he could've kept his spot in the nba if he was willing to attempt more jumpshots and 3's, and while he is a bad shooter the difference between him and rondo is that rondo always kept his confidence which made him a threat to score from everywhere.

Lakers could sure use a second guy who plays perimeter defense, and since their offense is “give the ball to LeBron or AD and get out of the way,” he would be a perfect fit.
@TTJJCC4 сағат бұрын
It seems that instead of teams wanting their point guards to do more than facilitate, the teams totally ignore the facilitating aspect and just focus on scoring.

I always felt like in Orlando the front office screwed him and Victor oladipo because they didn't know which one they wanted to be the guy and they didn't know how they wanted to use Aaron Gordon. All of em ended up on other teams anyway and with success.
