Elgar's last two works for The Brothers Wind were never completed. Presumably they would have each contained four movements, but in the event only two were completed for each - a sonata-form opening movement in G major, a Scherzo (in Shed Book 7) and an Andante arioso (Shed Book 6) that Elgar later published in a shortened form as Cantique for organ.
By 1881 when he wrote Shed 7, the group had grown to 6 players, with a violin joining two flutes, oboe and clarinet, while Elgar took up the cello instead of the bassoon.
But all four movements combine well to give a substantial 4-movement symphony. Rather that the classical spirit of "Shed" Symphony No. 2, this is of the romantic period. Beethoven hovers over the Scherzo, while Mendelssohn and Schumann seem to be all over the place, as do Gounod and Saint-Saens.
