Sinopoli's has always been my favourite interpretation of this symphony, everything is just right on point, the clarity, the texture, the tempo, the intensity.

I haven’t got further than the first movement. Dreary as hell. Listening to Barbirolli’s Boston radio broadcast is like the old joke, comparing Champagne to Coca Cola. Elgar, like his near contemporary Rachmaninov, needs good momentum to avoid wallowing in the richly textured orchestration.
