The Elgato Facecam Pro 4k and Facecam have been making waves in the webcam world, quickly rising to the top as some of the best reviewed webcams ever. Elgato finally sent some over to us to check out and I compare them side by side and also compare to a Sony a5100 with Sigma 16mm F1.4 lens. Do they live up to the hype?

what a cool video! great points. the mirrorless cam seems good for the price. but I like how much easier the facecam pro seems to make everything.

I do miniature painting streaming at 1080 30fps. While the Pro certainly has the best picture quality, I'm thinking that fixed focus of the regular Facecam might be better for me. It looked like the focus range on it was great and you were able to dial the picture quality with the software. I just need something that deals with my bright lights well and shows reasonably accurate colors.

You can always turn off autofocus on any of the cameras. I have to say though, a 4k webcam could give you an advantage. If you keep your canvas at 1080p, you can crop/zoom the image in digitally and still maintain quality. This could definitely be helpful with miniatures.

I like the autofocus comparison and how the blur effect looked compared to the Sony. I think the Elgato autofocus was actually faster than the Sony. What I want to know is, why isn't anyone making a webcam with changable lens choices like a DSLR? Because that would fill an obvious gap in the market for the demand of that feature.

Could you help? My elgato face cam pro virtual camera freezes and stutters when I stream using stream-labs obs. My pc is beefy and powerful. Set to bulk and Isochronous in camera hub. Still freezes. 😢

Try a different USB port maybe. Otherwise I'd say reach out to elgato support, maybe ask in their discord too

As a viewer i absolutely hate depth of field. I find it pointless. You guys spend a fortune on stuff to put on display in your background, then blur the heck out of it so we can't see what you have. So frustrating,

Yeah that's why I like just a little bit of depth of field (or blur, if faking the effect). Just enough to be pleasing to the eye without making it impossible to see everything in the background. Also shown in the video, the fake background blur setting I preferred was....0%. It wasn't actually none, but it was very light. Using it effectively matters, I agree that people blurring the heck out of everything with too much real bokeh or too high of a background blur setting are doing too much and making it not look good. That said, I do also have 2 other camera angles (one mirror less camera and one webcam) that better show everything I've "spent a fortune on to put on display" than my main face angle so there's that too :)

Android 14 = didn't exist when this video was made. Also I have several other videos using phones as webcams lol But I was aware of the native USB camera functionality they were working on adding. I hope your comment means that that feature is now publicly available.

The 1080p facecam isn't that great, a little overhyped for me, but the 4k one is much better. The insta360 Link also constantly surprises me with it's quality. But talking with some friends that I got setup with a Sony camera as their webcam, they saw the quality of the facecam Pro and Insta360 link and almost questioned why they should use a more complicated Sony cam setup that uses a HDMI capture card, dummy battery and need to figure out specific camera settings things like iso, shutter speed, etc. To me, all that stuff is easy, not even a problem. But to others, like some of the friends I know, the plug and play functionality of USB webcams is hard to beat when their quality can finally break out of the "it just looks like a webcam" territory like the insta360 link and facecam pro manage to pull off. Not everybody's level of understanding tech is the same. I'd still rather have a "real camera" in the setup, but plenty of people don't want want the hassle either. Also there were no DSLRs featured in this video just fyi.
