I've started using this all the time in my workflow. I bought it originally for streaming, but now I use it primarily to navigate After Effects. I have premiere shortcuts ingrained in my muscle memory, but AE not so much. There's a lot of tasks in AE that require multiple steps, so I setup the multiactions all the time for it. I find it VERY handy, especially with the profiles for each app! Like you said, it's great for actions that are tricky or you aren't familiar with already on the keyboard. Finder applications work great as well!

Great information, Chris! I'm running out of keys in Premiere. I need to get one of these and make buttons for track height presets, new text layer, freeze frame, windows layouts, etc. Thanks for making this!

Incredible video man really good quality tutorial as well! I'm just wondering have you perhaps figured out a way to make a multi action for certain effects or transitions? For example if I made a preset for a simple close up position and scale adjustment to crop to the top left of the footage. Do you think that would be possible? I've tried messing around with it and toying with the idea but I don't know how to get hotkeys for effects or presets
@ChrisOlson24 жыл бұрын
iCamskiez unfortunately the stream deck can’t. You would need to use AutoHotKey (Windows) our Keyboard Maestro (MacOS) to do this. I have hot key presets for my effects with KM.

Great video. Was thinking of getting one to use with Avid Media Composer. Wasn’t sure how it would work with editing applications. After watching this, I can see a bunch of uses for it. Thanks

Chris, I just went and bought the XL and I have to say there is not a lot of documentation with it. Having a hard time trying to figure out how to add commands for non streaming, web, tweet apps. I bought it for use with Avid Media Composer and I am just lost on figuring how to translate the commands in Avid to the Stream Deck. Cant find much in terms of setting up commands outside of Streaming programs. Did you do any videos on setting up the commands for Premiere or so? I know its not Avid, but at least it will be an example.. Thanks

Unlike your keyboard, Stream Deck keys are screens as well which makes a huge difference. Maybe you are young and can still remember the hotkeys in your keyboard, but for older people like me it is very hard to remember many hotkeys .. I can barely remember between 7 and 10 shortcuts so the icons on the Stream Decks are a great time saver and can not be substituted with normal computer keyboard.

Great video, Chris. Have a question, though...if I'm using a PC (and not using OBS) and using a 4 -monitor setup (with the fourth being the large screen that I game on), can I use Elgato to play three different clips on specific monitor with a push button on the Elgato or would I need special software to tie a clip to a specific monitor and run it simultaneously? My video card has 4 outputs. Thanks!

Hello, Chris :) Great video! any chance you could share the macro you use for naming and creating your template folder? or maybe do a video about how you did this... I have a similar step in my workflow that I do every day but yours is much quicker I already use Keyboard Maestro.
@ChrisOlson24 жыл бұрын
I might try in the future. My method of doing it right now is a little bit harder to teach. Initially my Keyboard Maestro macro used a bash script, and then I learned some Python and used that instead. Since I'm so new to Python, explaining it would be a little dodgy haha. If you want, you can shoot me an email chris@premiereguru.com and I could get you some screenshots of my macro/script

For PC users the delay in a multi-action can be adjusted but, unfortunately, it requires editing the registry. A quick search will find instructions from someone more qualified than I to show you how

new video with your keyboard shortcuts?
@TheBabaYagas4 жыл бұрын
I think the one thing overlooked here is that macros on your keyboard require your remembering key combinations and specific keys etc. whereas using the stream deck is more of a “macro” GUI that lets you customize iconography personal to you. I like to think of this as keyboard combos are kind of like the MS DOS of computing prior to a GUI/ modern operating system. The one thing you touched on which is crucial in my experience using the stream deck so far is the idea of carefully considering what you can remember and use on the keyboard as that is ultimately fastest with your hand versus putting it on stream deck. A couple rules of thumb so far for me are 1. single key shortcuts are not for stream deck eg: CTRL V. And, if a key combo requires lifting my hand off my mouse, then it belongs on stream deck or a keyboard macro... lastly, you mentioned autohotkey and it’s important to note that autohotkey scripts can be mapped to stream deck as well... which if one was really fussy about the speed of the built in multi action macro, they could make their own macro and run it using autohotkey etc. and it would run 🏃♀️ fast :)
@ChrisOlson24 жыл бұрын
David Mugford Totally. Like I mentioned in the video, I realize I’m definitely the odd one out from most people. Memorizing shortcuts really hasn’t been an issue for me. Even when I add 10+ new macros in a day, it’s never been a problem. But I recognize that isn’t something most people can (or want) to do.
@TheBabaYagas4 жыл бұрын
Chris Olson Films Yeah, I hear you. I fall somewhere in between novice and power user. Depends on the specific software i’m using, but i do find the stream deck has boosted my interest in macros in general 🤷🏻♂️
@ChrisOlson24 жыл бұрын
David Mugford well that’s good! :) as long as it gets people to be more efficient/interested in macros, then it is good

Hi. I recently got a Stream Deck XL. It has helped my work flow. I created shortcuts and hotkeys on it. I have a question. Do you know how I can insert images (.jpeg .gifs) into chat windows or emails? I've tried "open" and some other functions, but I can't seem to get the button to insert an image to where my cursor is. Can you help me figure this out? Thanks!

@John Martini no. the software for this device is free to download and free to use.

Please, how did you set up the DaVinci Resolve Program on your Stream Deck? I bought a Stream Deck XL but so far I haven't been able to make it work with DaVinci Studio 16. I acquired: "DaVinci Resolve Keyboard Shortcuts" from the company: "www.sideshowfx.net/buy" but it didn't work, the commands don't respond. If you can give me some information, there is some secret to work with DaVinci Studio 16, thank you.

Biggest question is whether it can be programmed to open effects you commonly use. Like keying , tracking or perhaps plug ins which to my knowledge have no hot keys. Having the ability to eliminate scrolling through the effects list would be helpful especially if you’re doing a pile of green screens etc

You can do this with the plug-in Excalibur for Premiere

I personally use Touch Portal and I like it better than Elgato (everybody will be different here) But just to address one thing that was said in this video. Touch Portal does do USB connections now. I don't use it with USB because I do like the wifi connection. I am using a Samsung Tab A 10.1" as the stream deck. I do agree that keyboard shortcuts for your most common task are best, but you can really map a lot of those not so common ones to the deck and can design your pages and icons to suit your tastes. Good video, lots of good info.

Hi Peter! I saw your order come through. Are you sure your tab is not muted or an issue with your speakers? In the years the course has been up, everyone has always been able to hear. Also, just a heads up, my course is technically discontinued now. I haven’t been able to get into teachable to disable new enrollments because of an old gsuite email expiring.
