It really is such a gem of an area (and the surrounds!)... Planning on visiting again this year at some point! As a local, what other sights/areas would you recommend that the normal touristy places don't advertise? We like the touristy places, but we love the local 'secret' places

Go around Millbuies Loch if you get a chance , you might even see a dogman if you're unlucky .

Great video bringing back memories. I lived in Elgin in the early 80s. At 0.56 I lived as a teenager in a house opposite the petrol station behind the man holding the child. Thanks for the vid.

hmm your at the petrol station 5 mins away from my old house in elgin, I lived down at the T junktion where the trafics lights are. Cooper pond is actually a victorian ice skatting pond and NO the library is not a castle nor does it look like one. Elgin Castle sits high upon ladys hill near the city centre and yes Elgin is indead a CITY. sorry Oostie but your info on the Cathedral is totally Wrong! Elgin Cathedral was destroyed by the Bastard Son of the Scottish king and the Bishop got a small army and laid seige and destroyed the Bastard son of the king's own castle on the loch island to which the ruins still sit. also the catherdral was also ransacked many times in its life and it was back in the late 18th centuary that the cathedral was ended as a city dumping grounds by the locals back then and was cleared up and also a lot of the stone was robbed by the locals to use in the construction of their homes and much of the houses in elgin near the hospital still bear the stollen brickwork which is intresting to see that some of the cathedral get a 2nd lease on life. Elgin city was defended by a large thick wall surrounding all of the city and the city was devided into 3 sections and paid tax's to the king of scotland and each section was deemed a Burough,the cathedral sites in the elgin cathedral burough and each section of the 3 buroughs had its own gate and just over the foot bridge behind the library is the elgin cathedral burough gate hidden by the vines and bush's beside the road at the flats. @8:22 that monument is forever an eyesight we all wish would dissapear! no one likes it.just below the ground near that fountain is the original seriffs Dungeon as that are was an active graveyeard and shopfront for trading and the victorians later converted it into a public toilet and later in ww2 it was then converted into a bunker and since the fire in the records building in cooper park by vandals the council has renovated the dungeon/toilet/bunker and converted it into the new storage place for the citys records. the graveyard was removed to make way for the road they council built around the church and in the 80's the road was ripped up and when they ruipped up the road they descovered to their horror that the bodies from the graveyard were never actually removed only the gravestones and since then the bodies were removed to a new consicrated place and the current slabs were placed also the dirt and flowers were removed from the old fountain and the fountain was restored back to working order. the city still has a fully functioning nunery to which one or 2 nuns are only permitted to go outside of the grounds of the nunery but once in a while the nuns open up to the public. last i remember the scottish nuns went to another country and some nuns from usa came over for a while. anyways if you had actually walked to the end of the street towards the roundabout where the castle sits proudly above the area you would have seen the monument and historical plauqe of the bastard son of the king and the destruction of the catherdral.
