How to prune basil so it gets bigger and bigger

Go from one little basil plant to loads of basil for your kitchen fun. How to use your basic so that you actually encourage it to get bigger and bushier.
If you are careful about how to take leaves from your basil plant when you cook with it, you can actually encourage the plant to grow more, and become healthy, strong and bushy. More importantly, to keep giving you basil to use. It's also super easy to propagate brand-new plants from cuttings. @@eliandkate Yes, I've noticed how strong the Rhino is, I live at the highest point in our village below the Lomond hills so we get a lot of wind but it's solid as a rock! We had 'hail and a gale' today but it was toasty inside, I love it. Thank you for this video on Basil cuttings. I did try it a few years ago, without success, however will be having another go. We do have basil seedlings coming on (Slowly) I may have slightly over sown, as there about 60 seedlings!!! However there are always friends and family happy with a free plant or two

The gardening world has truly gone topsy turvy; here in the States, grocery store live herbs are usually bigger, healthier, and CHEAPER than the starts in the big box store nursery area. So these videos help keep those savings going even longer!

@@eliandkate hi i managed to salvage 2 coriander cuttings and 4 basil ones . the original basil is doing really well i re potted it and there are about 15 plants . if i hadn't seen your video they would have died so quickly . i am so pleased with my results thank you .

Hey Akif Hmmm I'll check with you. If you mean the trays that are on the matting (green and black) then those are the seed trays linked in the description. If you mean the big black tray holding the water... I'm afraid I'm not sure if those are still available. It's the bottom of a large propagator - I think the brand was sun tunnel, but I've never seen them available again :(

It's difficult in the UK over winter. I generally don't try to grow herbs until March onwards, just too cold and not enough light.

I love this! Yes, I buy live herbs, and yes the practically immediately die. I appreciate your video on what to do about that, and followed your link to this video. I forsee a forest of basil in my apartment. Some one of mine has dropped a hundred seeds too. I hope it's the Thai basil, I've taken cuttings from the Italian one. Is it the same for my rosemary and oregano that I bought? I've become herb rich!

You should find rosemary and oregano just need a bigger pot and more compost They are both shrubs, so give them space and they will thank you for it

Hello! First of all great video :) I'm recently trying my hand on growing store bought basil and it's going quite well growth wise. However some of them have brown spots on the edges of the lower parts of their leaves and also the stem is going brown. From what I've read the stem could be from it being too cold for the plant, am I right? But the leaves I'm not sure of if it's been overwatering or not enough watering. Thankful for any help :)

To be honest Johannesburg, there are so many different things that can cause this that it’s impossible to say without actually being there to monitor what’s going on. The most likely culprit is over watering, basil doesn’t like to be sitting in wet soil so it will sulk. I’d say try changing up your watering, and make sure it’s in a warm sunny spot and monitor from there.

Can you re pot the separated basil plants in one much bigger pot away from eachother or is it best to just stick with the small individual?

You can do but again at some point you will run into the issue of them over competing as they grow, so you’ll just have to keep on top of things in terms of there always being enough food and water and space etc 😀

Hey Gobblygooke, I had ads on the channel back in the beginning but youtube switched them off on all the smaller channels a while back, so I'm aware some of the new folk to the channel will be seeing them for the first time (now that they've switched them on again). I always try to be 100% honest with you guys, so in the spirit of that, I'll be completely honest here and not bullshit you. I've allowed the ads to see if it is possible to recoup any of the cost of making the videos and blogs. I'm quite cynical about it, absolutely don't think it's possible without selling your soul but I'm going to give it a couple of months to judge. Straight honest answer.
