Ok so right clicking on the books and scrolls isn't identifying them, rather you're reading them which will consume and cast the scrolls and for books you will memorize that spell and add a set number of casts of it to your spell library. The staffs are like scrolls but with multiple charges, once the charges are used up the staff is worthless as there isn't a way currently to recharge them. To identify an item you need either the appraisal skill which will, over time, identify items in your inventory at random (the higher the skill the better you get at identifying things) or you can bring them to a wizard in the various camps and towns who will identify them for a fee. If I remember correctly you can buy the appraisal skill from the trainer in the tinkers camp for 5 platinum coins. Hope that helps!
