With the trailing arm supports replaced, it is time to replace the two "t-shirts", patch some holes and move on to the differential mounts, which are another very weak spot of the frame. With the reinforcing kit that we got we will make them as solid as they could be

Might I suggest applying winter grade chainsaw bar oil to the interior of the frame boxes when repairs are completed. I used a pump up weed sprayer, attached the nozzle directly to the hose and fished it into all the box frame construction.

Exactly, I used to take my used motor oil and pump into every cavity and opening in the frame and though messy at first I never had a frame rust problem

Very impressive welding Elin. I hope the owner will be on his way to the shot-blast shop after he collects the frame from you ? Once again your expertise has made what looked like a pile of junk, worth saving.

This was another great video, the adverts are starting to get intrusive, but that's not your fault! Keep up the good work!

What is on the diff bolt where you want it flush you use a slightly larger drill bit to ream it out some, that leaves a bit of a valley to weld in and leaves plenty of material after the cleanup

Good job Buddy. That’s a lot of welding and a big pile of debris!

Great watch as ever Elin and excellent result! Thanks as well for the showing how you made the jig for the training arms which I copied and worked a well as the rear alignment needed very little adjustment when the time came to check it. Looks nice hanging from the garage wall. One thing I found useful was to get two bits of 2" x "1 wood and drill holes to match the pin positions as a jig. then tack and using a small magnetic set square to check they remained vertical. Perhaps overkill but I also boxed the rear diff rail/mount and added a long plate to the top along with some gussets to the frame as the welds looked a bit suspect plus if you wanted to later convert to telescopic dampers/brackets its a lot stronger construct. Keep em coming! Andy

You did a great job on the frame! Were you supposed to paint under the boxed in areas or where you added the top plates?

Nice to see a quick turnaround on an important part of someone’s rebuild, and for a US customer ! I’ll check that I’m up to date on the Mazda videos but hopefully no more welding and fabrication for a while… just GT6 and maybe TR3 / 4 !

Looks like you can align tap those body mounting holes w/o clearing metal away from them.

HI Elin, Another great instructional video, thank you. Interested in why you wouldn’t weld the ‘armpits’ under the T-Shirt area where the T-Shirt abuts the frame? It looks like a great place for mud, water etc to get between the T-Shirt and the frame and is only 3 or 4 inches each side. I also saw a video where someone claimed the differential mounting studs should ‘float’ in the lower plates and only be welded at the top, or else there’s no point in having both top and bottom plates. What do you think?
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties 9 ай бұрын
You are right, that would have been a good idea. I did it this way because that’s how it was I never thought about it. I am not sure about the floating stud. Since the two points where the stud is welded to the frame are what fails constantly this means there is stress in both of them. I don’t see how removing one of these points helps. If the stud itself was what was failing then maybe the floating end would make more sense…. Just my 2 cents…

thanks again - very instructive. For tack welding, did you get the self-darkening eyeglasses from Princess Auto or Zenni ? John in MB.
