This was my overdrive and gearbox from my 1975 TR6. This TR6 was purchased in 2003 with 70733 miles. It has now done 127277 miles, so 56544 miles in the last 18 years including trips around Lakes Superior, Erie, Ontario (twice), Georgian Bay and several down to the USA with 6-pack, with very few problems, so I was probably due for some issues. The noise in reverse was terrible, so Tush recommended Elin. The gearbox is now reinstalled and the car is driving beautifully with a smother gearchange and the overdrive now engages in under 1 second, whereas before it might take several seconds and sometimes not at all. Elin did a fantastic job as you can see from the videos. Thank you Elin so much for such a great rebuild. And thank you Tush for pointing me in the right direction. Great videos Elin. Amazing.

I love that you also included the review of the switches. Just another helpful addition for those of us learning what is what.

These 3 videos are amazing. Thanks so much for making and sharing. I need to fix an oil leak on mine and this is giving me the confidence to do it myself. Great step by step video

Great job, Elin! I was getting nervous watching that pressure gauge. I bet the Chef gave it a little extra salt and pepper to bring it right up there. Thanks for another great video.

Yeah, you can imagine what was going through my mind.... what did I miss? Do I really need to take it apart again?..... LOL I should have played with the solenoid more times. Every time it moves in or out it lets a little air out. I just needed to do it enough times to purge all the air.

Good to see Cheftush again - but when is he going to complete his TR250? I miss seeing his video posts as well. Great work Elin. You always seem to make a very complicated repair - very simple!

Great information and definitely and inspiration and reference for my overall. I am building a trans for my gt6, tr6 transmission with j type. Interesting your natural safety switch, I don’t think we have that in the uk?

Good to see all parts. Can you tell me about the Non detergent oil you are using for a J overdrive gearbox, it is SAE 20 or 30 ? I did hear some guys using from regular engine 20W 50 to EP90 GLI.
@RustyBeauties Жыл бұрын
I use 30W. There are many discussions about the oil and many different opinions. The non-detergent is good for low pressure hydraulic systems, and that is what the overdrive is. It is also used for reciprocating compressors so that is my preferred oil.

So is it possible that the pressure issue was partly due to the line to the gauge having air in it ? Should you maybe hold it upside down when filling to avoid air locks ?
@RustyBeauties2 жыл бұрын
No, the air is at the operating valve/solenoid. It just needed to be operated enough times, as every time it moves it lets a little bit of the air out. I didn't need to wait, I could have just turn it on and of 5-6 times and it was going to build up pressure much earlier
