this race was the beginning of a new era. John Watson won this race in the McLaren MP4/1 - the first win of a car with a monocoque that was made of carbon fibre only. From 1984 on, every car had a carbon fibre monocoque. From that point on, the rate of fatal accidents dropped from 1-2 per year to 3 in 27 years. unfortunately Elio de Angelis was one of them.

no taht wasn't lotus week end at all ! The lotus 86/88 chassis was banned for the last time on friday, then that black flag... in my opinion, someone there was trying to send a "message" to colin chapman
