I spent a long, LONG time filling up all my raw mats, and at the end of that I had no interest left in me for gathering the other types. Now with these changes and a nice shiny new Lakon toy to play with, I think I WILL be gathering up a full inventory, and finally properly engineer my ships, instead of just the thrusters and fsd.

I did all the farms for all the mats and put in an insane amount of time doing it. I could feel upset that these changes come now after hundreds of hours of work but I’m not. I’m thrilled by this. I now won’t feel so bad about using synthesis or engineering test builds. Plus a lot of my squadron saw the work I put in and felt it wasn’t for them because they couldn’t sink the same amount of time I did. Now they can accomplish the same I have in a fraction of the time which will give them more incentive to play and join me in space endeavors.

“Frontiers’ brave new world”. Understated comment of the year. And the answer to your question is yes, instead of engineering to “just enough”, it’s now worth a solid look at just what’s achievable. The hours of gameplay required to explore the possibilities of what the game can actually offer have been reduced from “redonkulous” to “reasonable”.

I'm quite excited for the upcoming changes. I've never been bothered by hunting crystal shards and brain trees for raw mats, and while logging Jameson's crater is tedious, it's not terrible. Hunting HGEs is the one point I try to avoid at all costs, and I instead rely more on missions and traders for my manufactured materials. Seeing that missions will pay better, and that HGEs will be more rewarding, is an absolute godsend in my opinion. I will say, I feel like the HGEs might be a little too full, though I don't doubt we may see that adjusted in an upcoming patch following the T8 update.

Looking forward to the drop, glad to see I'm not the only one who "Groundhogs" on SDPs! Rather than the relog method for ground mats this update should also reduce the temptation to hit an unfortunate settlement over and over again with the associated impact on staff turnover and retention. Keep up the good work, not just the informative Friday drops but also those "run-throughs" which I found required viewing in my on-foot development. The only outstanding issue that remains for me is the lack of ability to modify suit and weapon enhancement leading to the creation of multiple grinds for suits and weapons - for example Mav with night vision for darkside mission using a valuable slot not needed if your target settlement is on the light side, so currently resulting in a two suit hanger requirement in locker and SRV.
@redthorne28364 ай бұрын
Exciting changes! I had given up on the onfoot engineering due to the 'grind.' I can get by with what I have, but I've always wanted to upgrade more things, and have more loadouts. For me, the onfoot reduction of mats is encouraging, as long as things actually drop or are available from missions. I do wish they would add a data trader for onfoot mats, however.

I'm so excited that these engineering changes are coming. I mentioned on a previous video, but engineering always felt too grindy for me to engage with beyond FSD and Power Plant supercharging, and the only time I put more extensive effort into it was to make my Exploration Anaconda, the Intrepid, even more suited for exploration with a few stripped down and lighter built modules. I might have to make some room for ED again and give some more consideration to more engineered builds, maybe mess around with more gimmicky builds too.
@GaveLJorgensson4 ай бұрын
I've played Elite off and on since launch (~26Weeks played) I have one of every ship type (I intentionally limited myself to 1of each) fully engineered for a specific task. When I tried to do the same with on-foot equipment, I eventually gave up unlocking engineers and grinding through mats after finding the system to be extremely convoluted, very random, and very demanding with regard to materials required. I remember grinding through 15 or so reactivation missions, stripping each place completely bare only to find I lacked the ability to purchase one upgrade for one suit. I eventually found it easier to go from station to station purchasing items which were already grade 3. Ship engineering always had its places to go, but until people when to the trouble to force a system into anarchy, finding a system one could farm for on-foot mats was very hard. With this change, I may give it another go. Hopefully the creator of the materials helper doesn't find it too hard to generate an update

I probably spent about 30-40% of my 2,000 hours doing the "grind" in this game. Kinda wish I could have that time back or be compensated. Oh well it's my fault for not waiting for them to balance it out. Lesson learned FDev. If I don't like something I'm going to stop playing until you "fix" it and appease my distastefulness in your game. Here's a couple things I would like to see: 1) Ability to deconstruct modules to get my materials back. This is very true with the Odyssey suit/weapon engineering. Once you do a modification it cannot be reverted or even changed. I have a bunch of FSD drives that have been engineered that are inferior to the new SCO FSD. I want my materials off the old FSD drive to put into a SCO drive. The new SCO drives jump further and they have the supercruise speed option. It's a no brainer to use the old ones anymore. 2) More module storage capacity. 200 is not enough. I also would like more than 40 ships allowed on carriers. I have a bunch of Type 10's with modules stored at bases because you cap the module limit at 200 but don't cap the limit of ships. (This one pertains to fleet carriers) 3) Why do I have to move tritium from my carrier's inventory to my ship and then to the tritium depot? Why can't I transfer it directly in? Also why can't the tritium depot store more than 1000 tritium...make it 5000 or 10,000. I have no use for tritium on my carrier taking up inventory space. And make it so I can just refuel my carrier at a system or base rather than running back and forth with a cargo hauler. Is there no "full service" stations in the future? Why am I paying a crew maintenance every week if they can't even perform the simple task of running fuel (tritium) from a base to my carrier.
@aleckx1233 ай бұрын
Understandable ! I would also appreciate to display the material reward Vs Items in stock on the mission panels. This could avoid to search in your inventory or using a tiers helper. Because those interesting changes are made to allow us to PLAY instead of loosing time to investigate. This could allow us to play with a single screen.😉

This is great timing. I have just mustered the interest in doing some in-depth ground game and engineer a suit or two and some weapons. This will make it easier. The issue I have when doing mission that offer mat's is. If the reward of mat's is as much as one more than it would take to fill my limit. Such as when I only need 14 and the offer is that of 15. It will be unatainable aka blanked out from selecting mat's. And if it states it pay say 15, unlike when you via mining or other such way of finding them, you only get 15, not the three time's normal which would be that of 45.

This is what the game needed. Before, you’d spend days or weeks grinding mats so you could upgrade something, cycling between HGE’s and traders until you just didn’t care about the upgrade anymore. Hopefully this will enable more people to actually play the game instead of grinding mats. My joystick went bad a couple years ago and I wasn’t enjoying the game enough to justify a replacement but this might bring me back if it’s done well. Here’s hoping.

I'm really looking forward to these changes. I've been slowly engaging with the engineering content recently after avoiding it since I start playing a few years ago. I hate the current RNG element to applying the engineering itself as just when I thought I had scrapped enough materials together it would turn out that I was now missing a key ingredient for those last few spins. So I'm really looking forward to having the guess work taken out of it. Also dropping the need to quit out of the game altogether and then relog at HGE sites will make that feel like a more natural part of the game. I take it the changes to Jameson's means we can't just sit in the one spot any more? Would be worth it though if we no longer have to do endless relogs. I also like that we should hopefully see more mat rewards for missions. I was enjoying doing a combination of missions and the above farming methods but the mission rewards were so low and sometimes quite hard to find that it didn't reward me for trying to go that route. Now I just need to work out how I find out who I have good rep with and where to find them.

I have never engaged with engineering in any way, shape, or form before. Seeing the material costs to improve my weapons made me bounce off of Odyssey missions almost entirely, and none of the ship module stuff was worth my time to try and learn for how grindy it all appeared to be. Now, however, I'm hoping to really dig in and customize my favorite ships and kit at long last, particularly as my usual activities of core mining and space truckin' have revitalized my enjoyment in E:D in general. In short, it will be good to have new reasons to play and new goals to more reasonably try for.

No more Power Regulator grind? Wow, it's going to be weird to just, like... leave a settlement after a raid mission, and skip the three minute wait by the regulator tray!

Well… I’ve stocked up full of all the grades before taking a break from elite. I ran into the problem where after grinding the engi mats, I had to then embark on a long process to farm the EX equipment … and no … I was not thrilled about how the farm for the BGS stuff went

Just bought my Federal Corvette after grinding massacre missions with a Type-10 in LowRES. Took it for a spin in a MedRES with two huge multi-cannons, a 3-beam, two 1 beams, and two 2 pulses. All gimballed. Hoping to engineer it so that the beams don't eat up all my distro so quickly, and other things. Turn it into a killing machine for HazRES, basically. How should I go about gathering engineering mats? Preferrably in a fun way...
