I really hope these guys get to contribute and earn a living doing what they spent years learning. They are soldiers just trying to find a job and a place to belong. After how we pulled out of Afghanistan I feel like we owe them a lot.

My guess would be that there is a fear they could be angry about how the US pulled out from Afghanistan and they might be here to get some revenge. Ukraine is probably being advised by NATO to act on the side of caution. It's not an unreasonable fear I don't think. I don't think it would be unreasonable if they did feel betrayed either. My guess though is that they just want to feel like they can contribute to something and earn a living doing what they are trained to do. Their career is in military service and now they don't have a military. It was hard enough for me when lockdown hit and I couldn't work as a live sound engineer anymore - I had no transferable skills. God knows what they must be going through as that's on a level I can't even imagine. It can't be easy being a former soldier from Afghanistan, now having no place live and no way to earn a living using the skills you spent years learning.

Ukraine already had to send so many wannabe Rambos home in the beginning of war. I am sure they are very picky now as weapon supply is also limited.

Unfortunately those days are long gone. There are a few thousand but no big waiting list and the numbers are nowhere near the 20K foreign fighters they had at the start. Most of them have gone home (and of course some of them are killed or captured). These guys are crazy experienced and have years of legit combat experience.

I agree bring there here and give them jobs with border patrol... I firmly believe they will excel in that role! The afghans are real privy people! You don't cut down a tree because one bad fruit!
