Did you ever notice? Whenever an elite lifter shares his/her knowledge, you get stronger just watching and listening to what they say. Matt and Dave are two of the people I listen to because I know they know their stuff. Thanks for sharing and great video.

As a young man I use to do powerlifting and strongman as a hobby. 20 years later and 42 years old I'm getting back into it. It's been 6 months of lifting now, and pretty much the entire time has been spent rebuilding a foundation as a natty lifter. Been working on sussing out weaknesses, and what my central nervous system can handle in regards to intensity, days/week, sets, max effort, beyond failure, and alternative lifting techniques. I've also been tracking my macros. Finally at a point where I feel I can start writing out a personalized program. You can't cookie cutter a good program, because it needs to be personalized to you, your goals, strengths and weaknesses. Mine is basically going to be 6 days/week, 3 days of lifting heavy at a near max effort (about 12 sets/day, rotating reps each week), 3 lighter days working on speed/explosiveness, mobility, and technique, and 1 rest day. Every 4th week is going to be a deload with 3 days on and 4 days off. The primary exercises I'll be looking to improve will be squat, deadlift, bench press, clean&press. I'll adjust as needed, but looking to follow this for 1 year, so long as I can avoid injury.

Part of the problem is the conflicting information that is constantly shared. As a competitive powerlifter, with 40 years of training things are made complex on purpose. And even the west side stuff dealt with a ton of equipped lifters, lots of drugs, etc.., How about this: master the key movements - recover well - eat well - use progressive overload - use a program that fits your need - read often - listen to multiple voices - be patient.
@chattingwithshap8010

I’ll follow up to my original post. Fir all the Science behind training, the sport is still incredibly individual in nature. There are people who can squat - bench and deadlift multiple times a week and not get hurt. Others may be only able to go one time a week. This is why so much of what’s put out there is simply for the masses. 10-20 sets - 5 to 30 reps -block training - conjugate - linear. Forget about the one guy or girl setting records. They may have great genetics, anatomy, could be in drugs, etc… My simple advice is this: Learn compound exercises Get on one leg and train stability Mix up your rep ranges Avoid doing all the exact movements over and over. Yes, master them. But also try new things. Please don’t try a PR everyday Use de-loads as you get stronger Ask lots of questions.

I started out doing just cardio. After 6 months of building a strong cardio base, and losing weight, I started working out. Since I’m new but has massive cardio base VS fat guy off the couch We both are brand new lifters but, even if we sign on to the same type of program, there's no way we'd could use the same training. I'd have better volume and time between sets. Better at processing lactic acid and I can handle better pre workouts with as much of a risk for a heart attack

I was a 19k so I like the tank analogy. Soldiers need to master the basics (running, situps, pushups, pullups). Then each unit should add specialized physical training for its specific mission and combat profile. The Army's been screwing up physical training for decades. After a brutal 18-month deployment (mostly urban combat), our leadership had us do (badly taught and implemented) crossfit. That caused more casualties than our deployment. I don't think any of them understood anything they were having us do and also learned nothing in the process.

It could be that a lot of what Matt says doesn’t apply to a non-elite raw lifter. I’m 53 and at my meet a month ago I totaled 84% of a USAPL raw nationals QT, which by that measure, makes me an average guy to show up for a local meet in Ohio. I’ve squatted for decades with my knees over toes and have virtually no knee pain. I never hear anything from the raw guys I follow about knees over toes.

from what I picked up from this though is yes he is championing straight shine which is all down to squat stance but it also sounds like polequin went way far over his toes. A little knee over toe is good but excessively hanging over will weak them over time
@aydinsha
@aydinsha Жыл бұрын
But it does apply because for you to have gone to wear you even have is still a product of your genetics. I know plenty of people that can't even squat 135lb on their 20s with proper form bc they have bad knees. Or they can't do bench or shoulder press bc they have bad shoulders..
@CankleCankle
@CankleCankle Жыл бұрын
I like Matt and he’s absolutely one of the top powerlifting guys. I don’t like the way he advocates against knees over toes and specifically Ben Patrick. A lot of what he preaches translates across the board, but he’s a powerlifting guy. He’s great at training powerlifting. There’s another lane of people who aren’t trying to be a competitive power lifter and just trying to function through regular life at a higher level. If you are pushing your training to the max and are pushing numbers then he’s your guy. If you’re just trying to be stronger and look good, he might not be your guy. He really put me off, on Mark Bells podcast by saying Ben Patrick doesn’t have huge legs so you shouldn’t listen to him. There’s no reason to die on a hill defending either guy. You can take tidbits from each program.

He's a classic example of dude who extrapolates n=1 shit too far: - Just cause his shoulders got fucked on a sheiko template doesn't mean everyone's shoulder will be. Volume tolerance varies for people, and that's why they vary on Sheiko templates too. - Just cause he doesn't have major pain in any body parts doesn't mean his technique cues fit all people. - Just cause knees back work for equipped westside lifting doesn't mean all people should never have knees over toes.

Agreed, I love how he can just wholesale dismiss Sheiko. I know so many lifers that had amazing results, including myself, one of my best 3 month cycles was a Sheiko program. I totaled Elite on a high volume program. And yes Matt, we do know it's right, Boris put a book out a few years back, the man himself. But yeah, okay, your shoulders were "Grenaded" so everyone must have that happen to them too. This is an issue with the former Westside guys, they cannot handle volume. They juiced so hard they got away with limited volume and never developed the capacity to handle high frequency and high volume training.

people need to put their thoughts about training in a notebook, for instance when you change your grip a bit in the main bar lifts write how much did you change it and how you felt about technique, bar path and muscle activation and also if you learn something new write what will you change in the near future

To be fair, guys in the 60s, 70s & 80s HAD to grind through the pain, and had to train without periodisation, and so would get injured. Why? Because, in order to make enough money to be in strength sports full time, they had to go to every single competition, to pick up a cheque. Now, you can back off, miss events, pick events, and take it easy now and again, because you're selling protein, wrist wraps, programs, etc.

I've heard reverse grip bench press does wonders to hit chest and relieve shoulder stress while pressing. Just go light and work your way up because although its easier on the rotator cuffs. You have to remember your shoulders are being used way less at a grip you're not familiar with so practice makes perfect. I would also just practice retracting scapula as much as possible with any horizontal pushing exercises so you use less shoulders and are less prone to injury. These are all things I would do personally but only AFTER working with bands on similar movements/ exercises to strengthen that shoulder right back up. Or cables but with light weight and for shoulders and posture. Once feeling better try the weights! Very carefully tho. Better to go slow and progress then to keep hurting yourself or making it worst.

different kinds of lifters, most of the elite weightlifters you see on tv started training when they were 5-10 years old and also very athletic from the start because they were chosen through sport selection, they developed high flexibility through years of lighter training also their squatting numbers are not that high compared to elite powerlifters who joined the sport at later stage in life after numerous sports and also not on the same level im terms of mobility in extreme positions
