Linux - Tab Autocomplete, Whatis, Man Pages, --Help

@19:41 For folks that might not know... UNIX (very similar to Linux) was designed decades ago, when monitors were not a standard, given part of a computer set-up. The "display" for UNIX systems, in the early days, was a line printer (like what you would see in an old movie). So, today, when a command scrolls off of your screen, keep in mind that in the days of line-printers (no screens), you would simply pull back the paper print-out to see the full output (whereas, today, it scrolls off of your monitor). So "pagers" (such as "less") were created to address this issue. And why is it named "less"? Because it is an enhancement over the "more" pager. "more" has been around longer, and does little more than allow you to page your way down the output of a command. "less", on the other hand, has many useful built-in commands, that let you scroll all over the output, and search, and redirect, and read-in multiple files, etc. So the "less" pager does more than the "more" pager.

Cool and entertaining video, but I have a few mentions: 1. the `ip` command is preferred nowadays to ifconfig 2. of course you can scroll up and down in less with the arrow keys, page up/down as well as enter for a single line and space bar for a page/screen-full of text; this applies to man as well, if $PAGER is set to "less", if it's set to "more", you can only use enter and space bar; 3. how is CMD and powershell on windows any user friendlier than the UNIX tools on Linux? And even funnier, how are the UNIX tools on macOS any friendlier then the (exactly the same) UNIX tools on Linux?

Thanks eli. I just started messing with linux about a year ago and I’m circling back to some of the basics for a deeper understanding. I’ve also been learning down several paths for coding, networking and administrative stuff. I feel like ive learned enough to essentially start over 🤣.

The "Tab" completes a command if there is only one possible ending for that command. For example, try "mor" + TAB, you get "more". It also works for filenames. If there is more than one way to complete a command, you type a second TAB. This is why you need to press TAB twice to see all the possible completions for a command.

Learning Linux and I am finding these videos very usefull, thank you. When you scroll on man or help you can also use D / B for going to next / previous page and up / down arrows rather than just enter.

In the early 90s my user experience with Unix SVR4 was quite special. I had an admin sitting next to me at the RRZ Cologne, Germany. He explained to me what to type to find, display and quit the man pages and vi/m... and then he let me do something and commented my actions with a mixture of rants, facepalms and silent frowns... you got to have a thick skin and a lot of patience to learn CLI Unix/Linux

You should use ‘ip addr’ instead of ‘ifconfig’. Ifconfig isn’t really used on many modern distributions or it’s symlinked.

whatis vs --help vs man. Something I've realized is that sometimes there are entries for one and not the others. Take for example the cd command, very common but the only way to get more information in system about how cd can be used is via the --help command on Ubuntu 18. man cd and whatis cd both return "nothing appropriate". Something to keep in mind, if you aren't getting any info about a command, try a different help format.

You can scroll up and down using shift + page up/down. On my keyboard (french) it's 2 weird looking arrows up/down, I assume on english writing keyboards the matching keys are "page up/down"

I have login an amazon cloud virtual machine with red hat linux operating system using ssh at my windows command prompt .When I start writing a command for example write first two letters of chown 'ch' pressing Tab once just makes a noise instead of autocompeting.If i press it twice it shows a list with all commands starting with ch as it should. I have installed bash-completion but it doesnt work.How can I make Tab to autocomplete properly at Linux sorry for the stupid question but could the problem be at my windows command prompt settings or is it something I should do at the cloud virtual machine?
