It's cool how flipping the guitar upside down to play left-handed gives you an inverted blues sound with the high and low notes. Unique

I know, I can imagine her playing that way gives her a leverage if wanna say that on the guitar that is hard to achieve when you are a player the other way. Shes a amazing player an her sound is a sound I could live in.

yeah, it sounds like the thumb is acting as a sort of muffler filter type of device. It definitely gives her an advantage on most people because of the natural tone youre gonna get from knowing how to play upside down.

You can tell the man just absolutely LOVED music. Most of the guests on this show elicited a similar reaction from him. The Roscoe Holcomb one comes to mind. He's just leaning back in a chair watching him play with a look on his face that says "Yup, this is as good as it gets"

Incredible stuff. I am a left handed guitarist too and this isn't easy stuff even for someone with young spry fingers. Elizabeth is a legend. Hands down the best fingerpicking lefty.

Her unique picking style is commonly called "cotten picking" and it's essentially Travis picking upside down. I assume she may have had an advantage at plucking out melodies as she did it with her thumb, while her contemporaries had to do it with the less dexterous index and middle fingers.

What an incredible lady. And Pete Seeger. I guess he was a left-winger, but a real one. Not like the ones of today. Genuinely cared for the underdog, a champion for the poor, and the history of the USA, in the broad sense. All religions, races, colours. And he stood up to authoritarian governments, often to his own detriment. Who knows what would happen to him if he was around today. I think he would be absolutely appalled at the greed and corruption at all levels of society.

An insert in a C.D. put out by the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. says Elizabeth Cotton plays the guitar left handed. But that's wrong. Mrs. Cotton plays it upside down The strings are: E B G D A and low E. That's from bottom to top. If you stop the video and look at the guitar strings, you'll see the low E string is on the bottom. If you know nothing about music, you can see the thicker strings are on the bottom, and the thinner strings are on top. This means Mrs. Cotton is playing the chords with her left hand, but has not changed the strings around. The low E string is on the bottom, but it should be on top. So Mrs. Cotton is kind of playing the guitar left handed, but also upside down.
