She is an elemental. Her voice is the voice of the mountains in human form.

Thank you for sharing! I'm from the foothills of the Appalachians in North Carolina, but I've been living in San Francisco for the past 2 years. Discovering your music has been direct link to my homeland and culture I so miss in a distant state. I just want you to know how important your singing has been to me

I Can feel my Old Virginia Appalachian spirit way up here in Maine. This is the music of my kinfolk back to the 1700's. The human voice is the finest instrument, like the lord said..."Make a Joyful Noise".

her two versions of "Amazing Grace" were a master class. And it was just one stanza. Amazing. What a talent. And so intellectually dense. Thank you, Ms. LaPrelle.

It reminds me very much of the Gaelic psalm singing from the Hebrides.

Wonderful. I could close my eyes and think I was listening to the late Betsy Rutherford as I did many times when I played banjo with the "New Ruby Tonic Entertainers" many years ago.

Elizabeth does a great job, perhaps you are unfamiliar with Irish Sean Nos singing which is by the way ancient. Sean Nos style invokes heart felt feelings. Please do not try to confine her she is doing a perfect job. I almost took your comment down for that reason. I think you need to expand your knowledge. It is Traditional and also Folk music so we do not wish to seek standardization as you seem to prefer. Each singer has a different style.

@Dina4pres2 Sorry, I am sure you can find them on line. Search again. As with many old time songs there are different versions.

Library of Congress has a site that I listened to Len Graham there. Not sure if you can listen to everything but there is a site on youtube named Alan Lomax I think the site is dedicated to his recordings.

This really is good stuff from a young singer; and she look so right too. As she matures she will learn to hold back a little - she tries to do rather a lot in each song. This is not criticism but encouragement; all the best artists get better. I've heard no-one else to match Hedy West with this one.
@BornRuffian111 жыл бұрын
Odd question, I guess, but anyone know if there's anywhere on the internet to listen to stuff that's in the Library of Congress? I really would love to listen to the version that Lomax recorded back in the day, again sometime. I used to have it on a cd with other old folk tunes and LoC recordings, that are now lost. This is pretty close though, sounds great, and will certainly do for the time being. :)

As a young girl I took light opera singing lessons they taught to perhaps clasp hands together at the waist as it helps your breathing. I would say maybe this is her personal method and related to the breathe.

Philo I can only wonder if you have much experience listening to acapello singing and this one reminds much of Irish Sean Nos singing. This is a STYLE of SINGING not an exaggeration. I see that you thought Iris movie version was a good version, movies tone things down to fit the picture. I love Iris version as well

I've watched several other videos by Ms. LaPrelle, and I noticed her habit of putting her hands on her hips as she sings. I've never seen anyone else do this. Does anyone know if it's just a mannerism, or does she do it deliberately--say for breath control, for instance?
@patrickv.39796 жыл бұрын
Really late reply, but it's probably a mannerism. She grew up in the Southern U.S., which is more known for that style of body language.
@Xocoma112 жыл бұрын
as a singer, i put my hands on my hips when i feel i need more lung volume and diaphragm control, usually for pieces with longer or more complicated phrases. i'm guessing it helps her with this song, and may also be a mannerism.
