Elizabeth Watson-Brown calls out underfunding in Queensland public schools

Queensland public schools are chronically underfunded.
The statistics are heartbreaking. The average underfunding across Queensland is more than $3000 per child.
Just one school, Indooroopilly State High School, in Ryan is underfunded by more than $6 million per year.
And as we know, this underfunding has drastic consequences - the overcrowding is so bad that kids have to choose to either go to the toilet or the tuckshop in their lunch break because the queues are too long. Some students have yet to see the inside of a science lab due to a lack of specialised classroom availability. They’ve lost their student support space, and lost huge areas of their oval to demountables. And yet, the state Labor government’s only new funding commitment to ISHS is to install a $1 million security fence. There’s nothing for new classrooms, toilet blocks or the tuckshop. It’s shameful.

I was under the impression public schools were mainly funded by state governments. Federal funding for public schools mostly goes via state governments. Private schools do not get state funding. The parents of children in these schools pay taxes towards education. It was argued that their children should get their share of the federal education budget. It goes direct to those schools.
