What a wealth of information you give out here, Elizabeth, Thank you. Everything is clearly defined and since you are an experienced designer and have work in most of these areas, you know what you are talking about. Nothing vague, all concrete and understandable. You are a gem!

Thank you so much for this video. I’m currently a junior Illustration major and taking a course in Surface Design right now. I often agonize over not having a set style- I’m glad to see that’s a plus for in-house designer careers

OMG do NOT agonize! Especially as you are still in college! It takes a long time to develop a style, now is the time for experimentation!

Good morning, Love your info. I am at a loss and not sure where to turn to or find information. I am a seamstress and designer. A local company asked me to design, make a mock up and give them a wholesale price for small batch production. The company has decided not to use me as their production maker but would like to purchase the pattern. Do I have any rights to this design or should I just quote them a price for the rights to this pattern to be produced by someone else and just move on? Thanks, Becky

If I am understanding this correctly, you did the sewing pattern, right? I don't know anything about that side of the business, I create the artwork that decorates the fabrics (i.e. flowers or stripes), not the actual sewing construction. I've got no advice on selling or pricing sewing patterns. :) Good luck though, congrats on creating something so awesome, they want to buy it!

Thank you, this is so helpful. I'll pass it on to the Surface Pattern students that are in my class. I'm not the lecturer by the way.

How to start if a person got no education connected with it, only artistic abilities and creativity? Do you need to invest a lot? Learn from the videos, do a course, make a portfolio, promote myself online. What are the steps? Finding time might be a bit difficult when working other job as well (need to pay bills etc.). I live in UK
@ElizabethSilver3 жыл бұрын
You don't need a formal degree, no. You can learn from videos and online courses. I teach a course called "start Your Surface Pattern Business" (go.elizabethsilver.com/start) that answers a lot of questions, but it is for designers who already know how to create art for products- meaning you have a small portfolio and can use digital programs to some degree. There are other courses and videos that can teach you those skills. The UK has plenty of opportunities for Surface designers! Best of luck!
