Afrikaans is inderdaad een zustertaal van Nederlands, maar van die witte boeren is al een poosje achterhaald. Nederlands was vroeger gewoon een vak op school (eind jaren 70 is het vervangen door Afrikaans) en welke kleur je ook had/hebt leer je het gewoon. Er zijn ook donkere Afrikaanse zangers die dit gebruiken (bijvoorbeeld Refentse).

I's not just an accent and it's not really "Dutch the South African way", at least not in the sense of "English with a Scottish accent" or "French with a Canadian accent". Of course Dutch was the foundation so Dutch is the "closest relative" (closer than e.g. German) and there are plenty of similarities. I have found Flemish (Dutch spoken in Belgium) to be even closer to Afrikaans than Standard Dutch spoken in the Netherlands. But Afrikaans is a proper language in its own right, not only with its own pronunciation but also with its own grammar, spelling, vocabulary and indeed literature. Historically, Afrikaans is a fairly new language with its roots in the 19th century, and it is unique: Afrikaans is the only Germanic and European language that evolved outside Europe.

@@iansoutryer3189 it's even more complicated, it is not close to just one of the Dutch dialects, but it has words that . I can easily name a few things that comes from a lower saxon one (Gronings) and you won't find it in Flemish. Stewels for example (Is stevels in Gronings) the rest of the Dutch (dialect) speakers use 'laarsen'. I like to call Afrikaans a language with influences from several Dutch dialects, and that makes some sense. Because back in the colonial days there wasn't even a standard Dutch in use as a lingua franca.

@@xXTheoLinuxXx Thanks. One does not come across an informed and educated comment on YT all that often. BTW: you will even find Dutch songs in South Africa (amongst the Afrikaans speaking Malay Community in the Cape) which more or less have fallen into oblivion in the Netherlands. And of course you come across words like "baaie" (much/many) which have no Dutch background at all. And one may be forgiven for believing that a "shebeen" may be an African expression, but in fact it's Irish. But my personal favourite is "robot" for traffic lights - I always like that look of that bewilderment on the faces of native English speakers once they see the sign "Robot ahead" while they brace themselves to be greeted by a little clockwork policeman at the next road junction ahead....
