On your Roosevelt hunt, get a small pair of pruning clippers and put them in your back pocket or side pack pocket. We use them quite a bit.

Thats some great advice. I put way to much pressure on myself. I work with a guy that puts in for tag every year. Never draws it and complains. He finally drew the tag. Passed up 3 bulls looking for the 350 plus and came back empty handed. I tell him don't pass up meat in the freezer. This year he didn't put in because he was tired of not drawing it. So he is not hunting elk this year. I bow hunt with a recurve. I have never had a compound. I have shot one but its so foreign to me.

yeah we have some horses out in the desert. We shot three bucks archery...my buddy got a 5 x 6 velvet and easy 200 lbs plus last year. Even small rack bucks are big bodied. spot and stalk during the day. they are active at night only..as they have no real predation, except for coyotes but they can't take on these deer...just the does and fawns. we walk washes slowly and quietly...glassing to the next bush or tree before moving to the next. It pays off and we stalk up to plenty of deer. just take it slow. plus wind check and sun above or at your back. Also, the deer look down the wash when bedded so you can plan pretty an approach if wind is down the wash. they won't smell you and you can usually glass far enough ahead to get ready for them to stand up.
