THE Frank Sinatra, chairman of the board, sat on the stairs of HIS set, watching Ella Fitzgerald, sing mesmerisingly. He wouldn’t do that for anyone other than Ella. She was really really special. The world falls in love with her over and over again, every day.

He knew she would steal the show but he didn’t care, he just sat there like a schoolboy and enjoyed it. What else can you do when confronted by an instrument so pure and lovely? Just thank God for the beauty of his creation.

Ella perfect and perfect arrangement. You could see how Ella was just allowing her performance to totally open up and flow along with the band. She was having pure fun and joy with this number. Just incredible!

My favorite Ella Song changes every few years. Every time I think I've found something perfect and sublime, something else pops up that I've never heard and I think, wow, that is beyond anything I've ever heard before. My current favorite is the Verve recording of Mood Indigo.

When this performance was filmed its incredible to think she had already clocked up 30+ years in show business. Like Sarah Vaughan, she always maintained the highest artistic and musical standard to the end.

2:37 Ella moves around F#, E and G using ornamentation (I think) for a moment on the word "Don't". I haven't ever heard her do this on any of her other recordings and to me it's absolutely scintillating.

ella is one of the few performers who sounded better singing live than on her recordings...and it is because she sang as she was feeling and not according to what was expected from a record.....her voice took you places you didnt know were there but she made it sound that it was the only way to sing it...

Long story...but I came across this clip when I was in the middle of a very messed-up part of my life, not the least of which was being out of work. The phrase "Tomorrow is another day" is such a cliche but it took on so much meaning with this song, and I kept thinking of Ella singing this as I worked to get myself out of it. Thank you, Ella, for inspiring me to keep trying.

Hey J. Were you hearing it for the first time? I first heard and viewed this clip on a Frank Sinatra/Ella Fitzgerd/Carlos Jobim DVD. The entire DVD is worth every minute of your time. Ella also sings Body and Soul, which is a gorgeous ballad, and it is every bit as repeatable! I had the Don't Be That Way CD by Ella and the Nelson Riddle orchestra, which won a Grammy! It's a pretty remarkable thing when Ella, Nelson Riddle, and his band improved on the studio version here. Truly gifted.

@@johnsmith8785 Hi John. Thank you so much for your note. My father had a big reel to reel recorder and taped the very program you mentioned when it first aired. Thereafter, it was played non-stop in our house. Of course, as a child, I hated my parents' music, but, with the passage of time, have come to cherish it. I hadn't heard this song in many years. It is quite simply perfection! I also have a DVD of the program. I think it will be my house music for tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me of it.
