I had the good fortune to see Ella twice live - in 1978, and in 1985. In '78 she opened with "As Time Goes By" - I will remember it the rest of my life - she was simply fantastic.

I saw her in England about 1960. Wonderful. I wish I could mind what band she had backing her but in those days I was pretty young and knew much less about jazz and the players.

Ella Fitzgerald is easily the finest singer ever to have lived. Especially at this time of her life. An absolute masterclass. So sad I’ll ever see her live. Her tone and natural genius in jazz is outstanding. So effortless.

When she scats hard like this, she's like a hurricane, an unstoppable force of nature. I believe that she was the best singer of be-bob, standards, and general all around jazz that ever was. Like one of her back up band players said: It'll never be this good again. It just isn't available. Lucky for us, there are SO MANY CD's of her out, with more being added all the time. I love You, Ella.

I have kinda the same story: I grew up with jazz, being surounded by it almost every day and use to hate it alot at a certain point, finding it very boring. Then, when I was a bit older, I started to appreciate it more and more. Now I feel so lucky I have been raised with it! =D
