my grandmother was in her 90's and had dementia and this was the song she liked to sing the most, she was always busting it out randomly with a big smile on her face. I would sing along with her. Glad so many others have a similar relationship to this song. I had no idea until today.

Because your grama don't have the dementia, you go to a doctor and hear him telling you that! then most peeps are going to believe what the doc said and going to be living like that just somehow to escape the harsh reality of the known world .. I just don't go that often to doctors, if I'm feeling ill or cold , my immune and body system will probably automatically recoup... And it's not that I'm stating that the doctor is no good Because if I cut my hand or something real deep I'll be visiting the ER room for stitches...

Two of the greatest performing artists of all time. Both of these people had a major effect on our music. Louis Armstrong gave us what is considered "American" music. He changed music forever with his style. Like Jimmy Hendrix after him his style was so different and innovative that everyone after had to imitate him or be left in the dust. That was also true with Ella. Salute Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, LEGENDS!

It's touching how many people share about their parents singing to them when they were small. I also have memories of both of my parents singing special songs to me. And I was blessed to be able to sing the same ones to my son. I believe songs touch an ancient part of our soul and I think it's why we have such strong reactions. God bless all those parents and grandparents who sang to those little ones. We never realize how impactful a small, loving act can be. Blessings to all!🙏🌝🌠

I strongly suggest you listen to Charlie Parker covering this piece.

Nikita Angarski I agree with you Charlie Parker's cover of this song is also a timeless classic, but how Ella uses her voice like an instrument adds to the emotion. You can almost feel the baking sun on your back and the sweat dripping down your face, as you are picking the cotton in the Summertime heat. While the rich slave owner's kids are happy, playing and laughing in the garden pond. They are the same age as you, but born in different worlds.

RememberToday4ever - not second rate. you can't call Miles Davis second rate. but everyone including Miles who put trumpet to lips owes their lives to Satchmo... also an underated jazz singer. God Bless them both Satchmo and Ella

Fantastic performance, but give some credit to the composer. He, too, was beyond genius. One more thing, Satchmo sang and people (me too!) loved his voice but yet he did not have a classically great voice. So...what makes him so much a star and then add to his voice Ella's classic sound and why is it so so so perfect?

For one thing, while Mr. raspy voice, that I loved all my life, had perfect pitch ! He was perfect contrast with Ella, who was also perfect, sang just like a bell......I think of them both quite often, and my small nothing brag, is that I got to sit on his lap as a child, and the thrill of Louis coming to town, on the back of a truck blowing that amazing horn, in 50s Louisiana......god I miss them both.

I often wonder what Gershwin would have gone onto......genius, so glad we have what we do...........he wrote the only American Opera, not sure what is out there now, hard to follow these days.......I treasure it all.

yes George Gershwin was a great composer but let us also remember that his brother Ira wrote many of the lyrics and I think(?) much of Porgey and Bess the first all African American only Broadway show--took a lot of guts by both of the Gershwin brothers

I see people write about that they were born in the wrong era. Well, we are LIVING in the wrong era as well. Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Jedward, JLS... Every new song is just a change in lyrics of the one composed by someone else before it. THIS is the REAL music, and although I was born in the wrong one aswell, I live my life in the true one.
