Ella was a wonderful woman. I had the pleasure of hearing her sing with Count Basie on the piano...in my neighbor's living room! her voice was angelic! Count and Ella were very gracious and truly joyous people.

With Louis, these two were the best Scat singers ever. Saw Mel live in Manchester, UK in fifties when I was just 16 and he was wonderful. All my mates were into R and Roll but I was jazz mad and already playing drums in local gigs. Mel played piano and drums and he was a really good drummer as some videos on KZbin will show.

I saw Ella in L.A. at the Music Center sometime ago matbe more than 20 years ago. She sang wonderfully, but even then she was a double-amputee as a result of diabetes. So sad. @@harveyperkoff6325

Glad I got to see both of them in concert while they were still around. Ella was amazing in 1983, but had faded quite a bit by the time I saw her a second (and last) time in 1988. Torme, however, was in top form right up until the stroke that ended his career. He somehow seemed to get better with age.
