I wandered into a little jazz club in New Orleans one afternoon decades ago and saw a young teenager sitting down with his feet propped up on a table casually playing a trumpet brilliantly. Standing behind him was his proud father. I was blown away (pun intended) by the youngster. He was Wynton Marsalis and his dad, of course, was the great Ellis. The world and I had not yet heard of Wynton but soon would! 🎺

My daughter also had a lesson with Wynton. She was in high school at the time (11th grade). I had to look back through my photos to find the date. March 19, 2013. A very nice man. My daughter continues to attend his concerts whenever he comes into town.

1:26 Best part. If a kid makes a mistake, giggles, and then tries again with zest and focus, then you're doing something right as a teacher. Playing well shouldn't have to feel like a chore. It can be frustrating and tough, but the learning process should be fun nonetheless.

In the early 80s, He was playing the Hummel Trumpet Concerto in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. During the cadenza, he just stopped, turned to the audience of 2500, and said he was having a "Bad Day"! It was amazing. Just a Human Being. No class barriers. No Snobbery. It was a really significant piece of information he shared. Sometimes it all doesn't come together. Sometimes it doesn't feel right on the lips.

I was impressed with this. I saw his Dad play in a hole-in-the-wall place in N'awlins a few years back. It was Ellis's love of teaching that instilled that same love in Wynton.

I grew up idolizing Wynton. Carnival of Venice was (and still is) the piece I love most to hear Wynton play. I've probably listened to that song 10,000 times over the years (no exaggeration). I attempted to play it my senior year in high school (1995) but it was still above my playing level. I don't know if I could have kept my emotions in check if Wynton showed up to help me play that song. I barely did just watching this video. What an amazing experience!!

Dear Wynton, You are a fantastic natural talent, but: The girl is bending her head in front a way to much. That give a bad sound because of lack of resonance in the head. In second place, give attention to the edge of the mouthpiece and the head. Look out for the overbite off the teeth. The lips have to stay cross to each other for a better sound. I'm surprised to be able to give advice to one of the best trumpet players in the world. But just think: not everyone is a natural talent. Kind regards.
