Today we are venturing into the impressive Ngorongoro Crater for a safari, a collapsed volcano that once stood even higher than Kilimanjaro. Ngorongoro Crater is home to a high density of wildlife including the most dense population of lions in the world. It is also home to the rare black rhino.
I wasn't too sure what to expect for our safari but let's just say this African safari blew my mind. Welcome to a Tanzania safari in Ngorongoro!

Thank you for your presentation. It took me back many years to 1958, when my father who was involved with the National Parks, improving their dirt roads. He sent me to join my cousin inside the Ngorongoro Crater where he had a tent camp not far from the lake. The following morning he sent me to fill the diesel 44 gallon drums in Karatu, but when I reached the top of the rim, I found that it had rained, with the road surface of red soil so slippery, that on going down a gentle slope, the vehicle slipped into the side ditch. I walked all the way back down to the caldera floor, and had to pass the seven lions I had seen earlier, resting on a small rise, obviously well fed. I remembered what the locals had said, not to run and carry on slowly. Just as well they already had their meal for the day.

You were right in your previous video. This visit has been more incredible than the last. What a spectacular place. This reserve is actually located in a caldera (which is the bottom of a collapsed crater). I recommend that on your next visit to the Canary Islands, you go to the island of La Palma. Where you can see another volcanic caldera (La Caldera de Taburiente). It does not have so many animals, but it does have impressive vegetation and plenty of water. Congratulations for your videos. Better and better.

Wow, that sounds like an amazing trip you have planned! My experiences in Tanzania have all been positive. I'm guessing you'll be on a guided tour? If so they feel incredibly safe - you're with a knowledgable driver guide at all times who understands the animals, customs and roads which really makes things so much easier. Everyone I met was extremely friendly and welcoming and I encountered a few solo traveller women on my trip too who were all having a great time.

Great video with excellent commentary. Looks like you had a nice day for it too. I was there in 2008 and it was bitterly cold for our game drive. I was intrigued to see that the road leading down to the crater has been surfaced. When I was there it was a steep and rough track that was scary in places. At the picnic area most of our group had parts of their lunch stolen by the black kites and at least one person suffered a head injury from their talons. Perhaps not obvious at first but the animals of the crater are facing an uncertain future long term. Very few animals are able to enter or leave the crater so there is much inbreeding resulting in genetic problems.
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick Жыл бұрын
Thank you! It was pretty cold in the morning, made worse by the wind. I didn't expect the crater floor to be so windy! Ouch - those kites really are fierce. It's sad indeed about the inbreeding.

Time back, some young male lions arrived from the Serengeti Park side, and chased away the old ones, so a new generation was conceived. Nature always sorts itself, as long as we do not try to interfere, as the weak ones are the first to be eaten. Before trying to remove the Maasai from this area, they should read "In the Dust of Kilimanjaro". Africa can teach us so many things, but for me the most important lesson was that of seeing the "humanity" in the original villages. They had virtually no material wealth, hence no reason for the envy that we see in our present "western" society.

Great coverage! Thank you! I am heading there in the next few weeks. What is your camera and zoom specs? How much zoom do you think one needs to get close up shots/video? I have a Nikon D850 with 28-300mm lens. Would that be adequate? Is tripod a must?
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I use a Panasonic GH5 camera with a Leica / Panasonic 100-400mm lens. The GH5 is a micro four thirds camera, not full frame, so that lens is the equivalent of a 200-800mm on a full frame camera. It's hard to advise on how much zoom you need. I don't think I ever zoomed the full way with my lens on this trip. The animals are very well habituated to vehicles so a lot of them are pretty close to the roads. Regarding a tripod, it's perhaps not essential for still photographs but for a video, especially if you are filming on max zoom, it's good to have. At times I did balance my camera on the side of the car and the clips were okay once I added a stabilisation effect in my editing software. I hope this helps you! I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time!

Great video. I am going on a Tanzania safari in July. Curious, what camera you used? Any recommendations?
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you'll have an amazing time! My main camera is a Panasonic GH5 which I believe you can pick-up at a reasonable price these days. The key thing was my lens - a 100-400mm Leica / Panasonic lens which allowed me to view game up close. I do love this camera set-up and am in no rush to change it!

@@EllaMcKendrickThank you! I do not take a lot of "professional" photos and most daily photos are on the latest iPhone. That being said, I do want to invest in an actual camera for the trip so I was leaning towards a bridge of some sort. Right now the leader in the clubhouse is the Sony RX10 IV? Any experience or recommendations on a particular bridge camera?

@@CoachPhilAdams I haven't used that exact camera myself but Sony is a solid brand. I've only heard good things about their cameras :)

Hi Ella, This is absolutely magical . You've done an extremely amazing video I felt I was there. Now let me bug you about a query of mine. I was planning to go for safari in 2020 which Mr Covid didn't like. Now I am planning for next year, I am divided between a self drive in Kruger SA or this one. Since I am intending to take lots of photos and I will be carrying a bunch of camera bodies n lenses , I would really prefer to have the safari vehicle at my disposal rather than going with a group. So just want to know if you had a similar arrangement , if so , from where and how much did it cost you . Any guidance will be appreciated . Cheers

Thank you very much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I went on a private safari so it was only myself and my partner as well as our guides. I’ve actually written an in depth blog post on Tanzania safari costs here - ellamckendrick.com/tanzania-safari-cost/ I hope this helps!

That depends where you want to visit in Tanzania. You only really need to spend 1 day in Ngorongoro and I'd also recommend 1 day in Tarangire. If you'd like to visit the Serengeti as well then I'd allow at least 3 nights in the Serengeti. Hope this helps!

Did you have just the one day in the crater? Doesnt look like you saw very much. I’m asking because I am planning a trip myself. However, if that was one day-I’ll admit-I’d have been disappointed.
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 3 ай бұрын
Yes, I just spent 1 day in the crater. The vehicle entry fees are quite high ($295 on top of your $70 entry fees per person) so most people tend to only spend 1 day here. You'd have been disappointed with seeing elephants, lions, buffalos, zebras, hyenas, warthogs, hippos, wildebeest, 2 species of gazelle, serval cats, countless birds, golden wolves and waterbuck (and perhaps more I'm forgetting as this was over a year ago now) in 1 day? I've been on a lot of safaris across Africa and I'd consider this a good day on safari. You may be disappointed in many safari destinations, especially considering that wildlife is unpredictable and on some safaris you may not see much at all. For example, on one day in the Serengeti I saw 3 leopards, a cheetah, dozens of lions and much more. Then on another day I didn't see much at all beyond elephants.

You can visit at most times of year and see so much wildlife! The only times I'd personally avoid are April and May as this is the period of the long rains. September is my personal favourite month however.
