Ellen Talks To Hero Softball Players That Saved Sara

College softball players on TEDS to tell about Sara's homerun. She hit a homerun which would of clinched the game, but when Sara missed first base, she went back and tore her ACL... then she couldnt move. Her teammates cannot help her, no pinch runner, so the other team decided to pick her up and let her touch each base so the homer will count. The other team let them win the game.

We played a team last night and It reminded me of this video. There was a girl (much older than the others) screaming at them. Any time they would make a mistake she would cuss them out or hit the fence. It was a really sad thing to watch. It made me think of this and how much sportsmanship they have. We need more players like this these days. Truly an inspiration. THIS IS WHAT REAL SOFTBALL PLAYERS LOOK LIKE.

what people don't understand is that the score of the game was 2 to 1 and sara's team was losing before her 3 run home run. it was a play off game to get to the championship. if her teammates had touched her, she would have been out or a pinch runner would have been put in and it would only be a 1 run single. This is an AMAZING thing these ladies did. it's true sportsmanship. they risked a game for their team to help out someone. an athlete, just like them. who deserved it.

It's good to see when people realize it is better to be a good person than to win a game. This is what Grantland Rice meant when he said, "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game". These girls & their team played it the right way.

its touching because softball is a sisterhood, i played for 5 years, whether you were the popular girl or completely unpopular it didn't matter when those cleats hit the field, that all was out the window because we were there for one purpose, to play, if you had beef with someone, you handled it by using that energy to knock that ball so far out of the park they never find it, but if someone got hurt, everyone felt for them because the fact was, it could have been any of us.

They had to ask the umpire and the coaches because they weren't sure if they were allowed to do that in a game. The rules stated that if the girl's team touched her, it would not count as a homerun. The girls on the other team were unsure if that meant that if ANY player touched her, it would not count. The umpire and coach decided that, since the two girls were not on the same team as that girl, it would count as a homerun.

I saw this on the local news when it happened. Then it became national news. I attended WOU decades ago and attended many softball games. I've coached competitive softball for years and can honestly say there is "competitive" and there's competitors. "Competitive" people care only about the score and will never understand the character, class and good sportsmanship exhibited by the two Central competitors in this moment. Vince Lombardi was wrong. Winning is NOT the only thing. For the three of them to become fast friends and honored the way they were shows that the color of the jersey is irrelevant but the strength of the heart is what matters in sports. Mallory (1st base) has been the head coach at Central since 2010 which not only means she was a good person, she was a very good player/coach. I'd be honored to have a woman like that coaching my child. We all need more people like these three in the world. I'll cheer for people like this every time over a box score.

She was at the end of her softball career. That was her first and only home run ever. Had her team intervened it wouldn't have counted as a home run. Then, it would've been her only home run ever, that didn't count. That might've been looked over if she had a life-threatening injury; she didn't. Sara worked hard as a college athlete, and Sara wanted to finish. I find nothing wrong with anyone's priorities in this situation.

Well they always say don't touch someone even if they are not in sports... im sure they called the ambulance but the other team wanted to help her around the bases. News Flash, the ambulance are not on scene at a college softball game, I'm sure they were in route. The point was that the opponents helped the girl around the bases, most wouldn't do it, they'll let her lay there until the EMTs get there.

Some of the posts are missing the point not discussed on the Ellen show. This was the girl's first ever home run she had ever hit in all her days of softball from t-ball to high school and college. her teammates did not want to help her NOT because they didn't want ot lose the game, but because they they didn't want Sara to lose her home run. Look at the other video showing the actual home run.

I had to watch it twice to fully understand this, but when I did get it, I have to say that this was really true sportsmanship. At first I thought the coach was a moron for telling everyone not to touch her, but then I got that he did that because Sara herself wanted to stay in the game and make her first and last homerun count. But because the rules said that her teammates couldn't touch her there would've been no other way for that wish of hers to become reality. I love how the opposing team members decided to give her the game. After all, they could continue playing while she may be permanently off the field (or whatever a softball "field" is called in game terms). Applause is deserved.

No, this wasn't a don't touch someone to avoid further injury thing at fucking all. They said don't touch her as to not mess up the game, that was all it was about and that's sick. It has nothing to do with whether an ambulance as coming or not, it's the fact that somebody, a human being, is hurt and the game trumps checking to see if she's okay.

Ellen, I understand her pain, I bent down, at the same time as stretching my upper body up. Yup. Twisted the knee. Since it was my first accident, I didn’t know the rules. I made an appointment, waited a week, went to the appointment, and was immediately scolded fo waiting a week. After explaining the staff didn’t inquire as to when I hurt my knee, all ?!?! broke loose.Never again did I wait to be asked when the accident happened, either for me or my family. that's not the point, she wanted to finish the game because her team would win if she did. She played all her life but finally hit a homerun, but tore her ACL so she couldn't move. Her coach asked the referee if they could help her finish as she wanted, but the game rules said her own team are not allowed to support her around the bases, so the other team stepped up. Of course anybody could help her of the field but that wasn't what she wanted :)
