Phone IMU would be useful for global orientation (magnetometers provide a good reference direction, but are slow); a good 6 axis IMU (no magnetometer needed) connected close to the motor controllers make sense for more immediate reflexes and such. Sounds like a pretty good plan.

evil is so much better at voice modulation compared to neuro. at the end she tried to say evil so cute in a cute voice. i wonder how vedal manged for them to do that if they only get text to speech input...

Depends on what he's using for text to speech, but some of them have been trained using AI to modulate the voice using context analysis. Which it seems like it's what Evil's voice is doing, although not always perfectly accurate it's able to catch a lot of nuance. There are multiple open source projects as well as paid services that can do this. Check out how to clone voices using Bark to get a pretty good idea of how to make a voice that uses AI to modulate the voice based on context. It can even make sound effects and do rudimentary improvised singing. And Bark is honestly pretty old now in the context of AI development, so I'm sure there are newer projects that are much more reliable and Evil is likely using one of those, probably even a paid service as that would be a good way to reduce latency, and we know how Vedal feels about latency. While generating voices locally with a semi accurate model can be pretty fast, it might be faster to have it offloaded to another computer. The voice is likely why Evil has slightly higher latency than Neuro.

Most of the voice AIs understand specific syntax for controlling the output with emotions, pauses etc. And you can train&prompt the response generating AI to use that syntax. [Source: did that as a proof-of-concept a year ago]

I think Evil also got a little bit of control over the parameters of the TTS, she's not just sending text to it. Or at least that what seemed like early on; with how her screaming and weird noises ability and such seem a little less reliable lately I wonder if maybe indeed Vedal switched to a more automatic approach.

Answer to the first question is on the description.
