Also "we just watched the most theatrical mental breakdown ever" is the whole vibe of his most recent special and it is amazing!! I'd love to see you react to his new special. I'd definitely recommend checking that out. All of his stuff honestly 😅

The part where he was talking about himself and the audience wasn't an act. I can't imagine how much courage that took to actually say that. I have pretty bad anxiety and I really really struggle even talking to people sometimes. Bo is an absolute legend and I have mad respect for him.
@k1llsh0t_872 жыл бұрын
you can see that he was shaking during that and I feel like him doing those little sounds before he went into it was him trying to calm himself down and his constant movement is him trying to not let his panic attack show and even those screams really felt like he was breaking down but needed to keep going so he let those out in order to help him keep going

As a performer myself, the line about "they're just staring at you" gets me. It's amazing how you can spend hours preparing to perform for the people and then instead of them telling you how great you were, they point out the 1 error you made, or what they'd like you to do differently. For someone who already has insecurities like Bo has always dealt with, the criticisms make it harder to perform. It puts additional strain because he doesn't want someone to watch him and be disappointed. The critiques are hard to deal with because they make you want to be perfect and then you end up harder on yourself because you're already your biggest critic, but now you have people pointing out things and you realize you've disappointed someone, so you become harder on yourself. And if you already are insecure, it just builds those insecurities to be bigger and bigger. And I can only imagine how many critics online he has to listen to. It's no wonder he took so much time off. His genius is being wasted because people make it difficult for him to not only perform but to survive.

This is one of those things that's good out of context but great in the context of the ending of the full show (Make Happy). All this stuff was bubbling under the surface and this piece really kind of summarized the layers of it, in how the seemingly shallow observational comedy about the hand in the Pringles can and the fillings in the burrito not fitting gradually becomes a metaphor for his own feelings of having bitten off more than he could chew by choosing to become an entertainer when he was kind of too young to understand the weight of it. He metaphorically got his hand stuck in the Pringles can and overstuffed his burrito, if you will, which is why he took a break from performing after this (although he did write and direct a movie called "Eighth Grade" in the interim). I would say Bo Burnham's last three specials are kind of like a trilogy. "What.", "Make Happy" and "Inside". He came up in comedy very young. He started out on KZbin and then did two specials ("Comedy Central Presents: Bo Burnham" and "Words, Words, Words") before turning 20. He's gotten a lot more introspective (and in some ways retrospective) since.

Bo’s introspective comedy is genius. The funny is insanely funny and well done…but at no point should anyone think he isn’t talking about himself with talking about burritos and Pringle’s. He tries to bear his soul oh so briefly, but Bo knows the hard part of getting others to pay attention is to make it entertaining. He intertwines the lyrics in such a clever way that if someone isn’t paying attention, they’ll miss it. He even says it at the end “And if they don’t understand you, you run it one more time.” Just watch the beginning of the special. He is going about his day with a clown nose on. People look at him with surface value eyes…but he’s not here for us to share his problems…he’s here to entertain us in a way where we understand our own problems. As we laugh, while he attempts to give us what he cannot give himself.

Someone probably already said this, but if you listen to the first half again, it’s actually a sort of veiled metaphor for what he says in the second. The Pringles and burrito are both something which starts off good, but ends up uncomfortable and messy by the end. In a similar way, his career started with him making funny videos in his bedroom, and by the time this was recorded he regularly had panic attacks on stage.

Technically that's not how he ends it. That's how the live show ended. There is a very short outro-song on the special that wasn't part of the live performance. "Are you Happy". It's directed at the viewer and touches on the overarching theme of the edited film (special). I HIGHLY recommend watching the whole special. His comedy has evolved significantly and you can see him grow as an artist and as a person through his specials. His first special was when he was only like 18/19 years old. - Of course, reactions first! but definitely go watch the whole thing afterwords.

Hi Ellie, I think you had the youtube video and your webcam video out a sync a little on this one. Sounded like you were reacting to the lines before they had actually happened.

This probably wasn't the best song to start Bo Burnham with, but good job reacting. You missed some things but that's okay, it was your first time listening.
