Elliot, wowww! I love your unique perspective on the movie choices you made from Criterion. You verbalized the impossible in some of your descriptions of the movies (especially "Death in Venice."). (Yes, there is more to that movie than the sexual aspect and I loved the way you verbalize it.) It was interesting in the choices you made, but it was also interesting the the choices you didn't make. Thank you for not selecting "Citizen Kane." I worship that movie, but enough already. . . .! Of course, I have my own "passions." I loved "The Red Shoes" and "Black Narcissus", but, again, enough already! "Wages of Fear" is definitely one of those unique movies that deserves more attention, but I don't question your choice of "Diabolique". I still shudder when I think of the ending of that movie. Personally, I think it is the scariest ending ever filmed. I look forward to your further programs and your unique perspective.

@@ElliotCoen I think so. I just recently got into collecting blu-rays. The Criterion Collection is not new to me. I have many oop dvd's and some films like Solaris and Salo on dvd that I won't be upgrading to blu-ray. I got out of purchasing physical films for a LONG time. I never got into the blu-ray revolution until very recently. I thought the advent of streaming would bring more choice. It has, but just shitty choice for the most part. So I am building up a library of good films from Criterion. Since quarantine began, I've probably bought about 40 Criterion blu-rays.

I heartily agree Elliot. Of the ten, I haven't seen Desert Hearts but I really enjoyed (with Stalker substitute 'challenged by') all the others and would enjoy even more with Criterion's sterling transfers and yes great supplements for most. Talking of which, I recently scoured the Criterion collection for discs that were both of seminal films that really advanced cinema as an art well as being stunning to look at (demanding the blu-ray version) AND had a correspondingly rich range of supplements focusing on their components (cinematography etc). They were Notorious (Hitchcock), Barry Lyndon (Kubrick), Mishima (Schrader), Blow-up (Antonioni) and Midnight Cowboy (Schlesinger). Without exception their transfers and supps surpassed my high expectations and merit monthly reviewings. Midnight Cowboy was scripted by Waldo Salt and featured a great doco about that splendid survivor of the Hollywood blacklist. And the director and Salt teamed up again in Day of the Locust which is also great and not available anywhere on Blu-ray despite a big following, Based on a major novel on the dark side of Hollywood. I urge Criterion to add this to its collection!

Possibly my favourite collection of movies you’ve made so far. Plenty of important and eye opening films that make up my filmic journey as well (Desert Hearts, Dreams and obviously Tampopo) . Watched Death in Venice for the first last week and it’s one I have very mixed feelings on. Beautifully constructed and made but it was uncomfortable to watch. It’s not the young boy part as I think the Special Feature do a job job of showing where that line is. Films that feature male (or female) gaze just leave an uneasy feel to me as an observer. Sometimes that obviously the intention. Thoroughly enjoyed the film as a whole though 😀 the lighting in the room is up another notch as well 👍

Elliot, I hope you find this comment as the video is a few months old now, but I have a question about a film and you would appear to be the guy to ask. In the late 80s I watched a Japanese film on television that, to this day, I remember mostly because of its unexpected brilliance. I was only eighteen, maybe, at the time and a complete novice about world cinema. I still am, I'm ashamed to say. I need to see this film again, but I can't give you a title, or the names of director or cast, or even year of production. I watched it on TV in 88/89 perhaps, but it could have been made any time before that, although I remember thinking it looked like a new film at the time. It was a beautiful film to look at, it was Japanese, and from what I can recall, it was about a doctor, or some professional person, who has just been diagnosed with a terminal cancer. This is where my memory fails me completely. Because of his diagnosis, he goes off on, maybe it was a kind of bucket list hunt, or certainly some sort of emotional discovery about life. I really, really can't remember anything that might help you to help me in finding a name for this movie. I saw it once, it was an ultimately positive, uplifting story despite the subject matter, and I also believe that it was a visually beautiful looking movie with some nice special effect sequences. I'm sorry for having so little information, but if you have any ideas about what the movie I watched was/is called, I'd appreciate it immensely. I so badly want to watch it again. Thank you.

@@ElliotCoen Thanks for the quick reply. I just had a quick read about Ikiru. The film I saw was definitely in colour. Could someone have remade Ikiru? Are they as fond of remakes in Japan as Hollywood is? The only other explanation would be the fallibility of my memory, or perhaps I saw Ikiru and I am conflating it with another Japanese film I saw during the same period. I'm a little depressed now. I only have about ten Criterion titles, and today my copy of Barry Lyndon arrived, so I might sooth myself by watching that😊. Thanks fElliot.

So, in part to you, Elliot, I decided to jump on The Criterion Collection bandwagon, much to my wallets cries. My first purchases were: The Blob Tampopo Stalker Life of Oharu Yi yi Badlands Anatomi of a murder 12 angry men Diabolique Night of the living dead Age of innocence

Elliot Coen, The one I know the least about is Life of Oharu. Have you seen it?
@ElliotCoen4 жыл бұрын
@@Armandthevampire yes it's a classic. Mizoguchi was so good at portraying women being oppressed in various societies in Japanese history. It's a masterclass in filmmaking.

Elliot Coen, It’s also thanks to you that I prioritized Mizoguchi and finally watched my first (but certainly not the last) of his movies, Ugetsu monogatari. Loved that one, I hope it’s not too high a target to live up to for his other movies that I plan to watch and enjoy as soon as I can.

Elliot Coen, I also really loves Kobayashi’s Harakiri and and Ozu’s Tokyo Story and Good Morning. Any other movies from them that you would recommend?

I'd love to see your thoughts on the Korean new wave! Another suggestion would be Chinese cinema, because I'm not very knowledgeable about it!
@ElliotCoen4 жыл бұрын
I'll add South Korean and Chinese films to my video idea list. I'm a big fan of the Chinese filmmakers I've come across. Jia Zhangke is my favourite Chinese director, and I'm a huge fan of Taiwanese cinema from the likes of Edward Yang and Hou Hsaio-Hsien :)

@@ElliotCoen I agree and Zhangke keeps getting better with A Touch of Sin and even that topped by Ash is the Purest White. Both featured on Australia's SBS Channel's World Movies - for residents. Criterion needs to get on board!

A big yes for Desert Hearts. It would be a pity if people who feel antipathy to gay films could miss this, in the same way that people missed out on Portrait of a Woman on Fire. Everything about it is topnotch. Not so keen on Death in Venice though : overwrought where it should be subtle (and I like Visconti), but I know I'd be shouted down by many! BTW, Elliot, are there any Tarkovsky films you particularly like?

You need to stop watching yourself! ;) I picked up Klute, Swing Time, Fail Safe and Face In The Crowd, each scratches a particular itch.

Thompsom is very weird critic. Reading his biographical dictionary of film, i come away wondering why the hell he's a film critic at all because he doesn't seem to like much of anything, but for an unabashed love for Hawks.
