I think she is right as it is a tradition in Isan that the sticky rice almost always eaten with Somtum. However, not all Thai eat somtum with sticky rice, I come from Chiangmai we don't normally eat Somtum with sticky rice.

Hat Yai fried chicken is so famous that several places in Bangkok advertise their friend chicken as Hat Yai fried chicken. Whether it is true or not, I don't know. I tried one such in my housing village when a roaming vendor parked his motorcycle with side car and began frying chicken in hot oil. It was good. It was crispy as it was freshly fried and tasted good with herbal fragrance. Never try the original in Hat Yai.
