An artist of immense stature and dignity. At ease as much in German Art Song as she is in Mélodie and cabaret. ❤

She makes it sound so effortless. I also love how she makes her high notes sound loud, but they're not obnoxious. They're just right! :)

I agree, and she has such great feeling for the text as well.

To go from listening to Jon Vickers sing "Vesti la Giubba" to hearing Elly Ameling sing this I can't help but think how much diversity and how many different wonderful voices God created. All different, all beautiful in their own way and Elly presents some of the absolute best from this world. :)

Così è l' ironia, per definizione...perfida, fredda, e amabilissima allo stesso tempo! Lontani anni luce dalle caricature degli " artisti" odierni.

I’m intrigued that Elly Ameling in her introduction contends that the setting for this song is a French music hall. I had always imagined that the setting is a London music hall.

Also I query the accuracy of describing Kate Greenaway as a fashion designer. Greenaway was a book illustrator - albeit a book illustrator who influenced children’s fashion.

__________________________________ Beneath the large Greenaway hat, Putting on her brilliant smile, The fresh and charming laugh Of a wide-eyed sighing babe, Little girl with velvet eyes, That's the Diva of the Empire, That's the queen they're smitten with, The gentlemen And all the dandies Of Piccadilly. Into a single "Yes" she puts such sweetness, That all the snobs in waistcoats Welcome her with frenzied hurrahs, Toss bunches of flowers on the stage, Without observing the sly smile On her pretty face. She dances almost mechanically And lifts, Oh! so modestly, Her pretty frilly underwear, Showing her wriggling legs, At the same time it's is very, very innocent And very, very exciting.

The Wikipedia article for which you provide a link contradicts what Ameling says about the song.

@@MrAlexsegal Well, Mrs Amelings explanation about the Greenaway hat seems basically correct, if possibly geographically slightly inaccurate.

But is there any evidence for Elly Ameling’s claim that Greenaway hats were designed by a fashion designer called Greenaway?
