I bought my ELNA SU 62C in 1986 from a Sewing Center. I wasn't sure which model to buy so I went in back and talked to the machine mechanic. I asked him which model did he like and why. He said Hands Down the ELNA SU 62C is his favorite because he said it is built like a Tank and they rarely break! They run smooth, quiet and fast and in all these years I have never had a problem with mine!! Don't buy the plastic junk with digital electronic boards and expensive parts that so many companies pump out these days! They DO NOT last and they are super expensive to repair!

My grandmother bought this for me when I was 15-16 years old. I made my first prom dress with it. A few years ago I was sewing an upholstery cover for a sofa in our RV. Sewed right through my index finger. It didn't hurt the machine at all. Just took it in to the shop for service. Looking forward to a few more years of smooth sewing ahead. Love, love this machine.

I have newer well known machines but the Elna is my all time favorite. My mother bought it used when I was a child in the mid seventies. I like my Viking and Bernina but this Elna is truly excellent.

I needed a sewing machine, just for patches and repairs etc, so I went to a repair shop and bought an old Singer that had been overhauled. It was so worn out that even a complete overhaul didn't make it usable. Put it on full zig-zag and it would break the needle. I took it back and the shop owner made me a great deal on a little Elna just like in this video. It came with about 50 cams and a really solid steel carrying case. Now I just need to learn how to use it. Thanks to KZbin I am able to thread it and do basic stuff with it.

Thank you so much for this video. I bought this very machine yesterday at a thrift store for $125. I knew it was a good buy, but I knew virtually nothing about it and what it was capable of doing. There are many video tutorials online for the 62C. (Elna). I found a lot of information. I also joined the best Vintage Elna Group on Facebook. Amazing knowledge. Helpful. Courteous. You have what could arguably be, one if the best mechanical machines sewing machines, ever. I have Bernina Record 830. I use at classes weekly for 7 years. Also the Bernina 807. Plus a knee B380. The Elna 62C purrs and I didn’t know it but turned out to be my favourite.

You are 100% correct ! Elna also made an industrial model . Quality and reliability is superb. I use to stand a cigarette on its end and run at full speed to show how smooth they run with the full rotary bobbin . Try it , people would think I glued it to the machine top , lol ! , Only models made exclusively in Swiss factory We sold Elna for 50 years . You do a great job showing the Elna SU Show how to remove bobbin and thread cutter .Bernina was considered sister to Elna .

I have one of these machines that's in a beautiful white cabinet that I bought 20 years ago for 45.00 and it's my go to over my newer machines. I am still learning all the the beautiful stitches. I had it serviced when I bought it and it's a jewel, my only problem is the foot control for low doesn't work now so I am looking for a placement. Thanks for the valuable information.

This is the first machine I bought myself, 2nd hand in 1989, and it’s still sewing beautifully. The Swiss Elnas are just fabulous, sad that the factory closed down. I think if you use the quick reverse while cam reader is in use, you can break the cam gear.

Thanks for this review. It confirms that I had good reason to love mine, which developed a bobbin issue after almost an amazing 40 years of use. (The thread won't snap in.) If I had mechanical skills, I'd think about tearing into it! A recent estate sale "find" is the same era machine, however, the needle position dial is locked. Hmmm. I have an Elna Carina SU. Think one of the last all metal ones made. An issue of age when I went to try to buy cams after I had it a year that guy said it was 8 years old but I bought it new in a box at a store? No issues now in hindsight prefer it older. I hardly use decorative stitches on machines as I do free motion designs. Most decorative stitches to me are too small to matter or see. I did find out over time it really eats threads. As ive bought Vintage machines now in last few years I got braver to work on my own and not pay for bad service. Recently took apart the race and found two threads stuck in there for how long, but had got it serviced? Cleaned it all out and runs better than it has in years. This is one that did do the blind stitch and other utilities stitches better. In the 70s I bought cheap plastic machines that wore out in a coupe years then took a class at night and they had Elnas so got mine.

This afternoon I picked one of these up from the recycle mart for $15, it didn't come with cams but I am able to do straight and zigzag without them. It's in perfect condition and I can't believe how quiet and smooth it is, I'm in love with it. The tension is set on 5, the stitch looks fine but I feel it is just a hair too tight, which way do you recommend I turn the tension dial, back towards the 4, or up towards the 6? I realise I could try it out for myself but I'd rather know which direction to go before I mess with it too much.Back in the 70's I had a Lotus and it was a fantastic machine too. Thanks very much for your video.

I purchased this machine in 1973. I have not spent a cent on it until now. I need a gear cam (which controls the automatic stitches and the movement of the needle from left to middle and to right) which I have ordered From overseas and will fit myself. There is a video online to tell you how to do this. Looks fiddly but I am sure it will be smooth. The part I have ordered is not a genuine part - Elna advised that they only keep spare parts for their machines for about 10 years. Sadly they under estimated the life of this machine Beautiful machine, would never consider an alternative.

I agree the Elna SU 62 is an amazing machine! Although I gave my Elna SU to my daughter...I have have managed to find an Elna Supermatic which works. I also found an Elna Super that did work until recently but now will reverse only. When I open the top both machines look like they have same hookup for reverse, and that the 'reverse only' machine is missing the screw onto which the long spring and the short spring are attached. Does this make sense? Appreciate your response.

Have you tried a 1970s Kenmore free arm such as the 158.1913? I think you'd be impressed, i.e. no nylon gears, 1.2 amps, etc. As good as this Elna is (I have the very similar SU 62C), the lack of pressure control and droppable feed dogs are two major negatives. Good review of it, though -- a good machine.

This may be helpful to you. A little long but necessary. Elna I wrote this sometime ago, in the event it may take some confusion away from the different way of operating SINGLE and DOUBLE Cams. These instructions will help I hope. In addition, once you know this it will become second nature. **IMPORTANT NOTE** NEVER REVERSE with any CAM IN THE STACK. •Tape a note to your machine for 6 mths if need be [late night sewing, extremely tired, I did this. I manually reversed for ‘1 second’ and no sign, no noise , however I had sadly broken the gear pinion, although I did not know it]. Elna technician had to replace the gear pinion. Reasonably easy to do. Don’t let anyone tell you it is not. I would advise a ‘reputable’ Elna technician do this or any work. Or, learn to do it yourself via the Manuals that are in a section, here in this amazing group. [Elna Vintage Group. Contact me for name to join] A very knowledgeable group that can usually troubleshoot most things and very happy to engage & troubleshoot. Lastly, you have acquired an amazing machine here. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Or, ‘take it off your hands’. (Which I have heard happen sadly with a few ppl unwittingly taking it to a service dept [not Elna] and be ‘persuaded’ to part with theirs). No! Get this machine sewing correctly and it is magnificent. On par or I will say the best of my vintage machines- Bernina 830 Record, 807 and modern the modern Bernina, in my opinion. That is saying a lot. And yes, I love this machine. Links below : facebook.com/groups/VintageElna/permalink/2527650404185694/ facebook.com/groups/VintageElna/permalink/2527666434184091/

It's a shame that these machines aren't more widely known and appreciated - even on this side of the Atlantic, but the plus side to that is that for anyone trying to find one, they don't command high prices either. Berninas do - at the last count I had 5 of them from the 600 series to the 1000 series. Very very good machines, but you know what ? these Elnas outperform them in smoothness and versatility (especially with the cams). Not a fair comparison in some ways as most of the domestic Berninas are oscillating hook and however well engineered can never be as smooth as a good rotary hook. (Not all rotary hooks though) Pfaff 1222's are also smooth, and have some nice features that the Elnas don't (i.e. top feed and needle up mechanism) but they're a nightmare to work on (don't ask) and a lot of machines of this vintage will inevitably need some TLC and possibly replacement parts. The only thing I'd like to add to the Elna is a single hole needle plate for straight stitching. Never seen one - they did exist, but were an optional extra, so I guess there were never many around.
@thesergeant3524 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I love Berninas but only the flat bed models with their rotary hook (X40 series, 950,117, 217, etc.) I had a chance to get a rotary hook industrial Elna and passed on it. Regret it to this day.

Love these machines but don’t reverse while in zigzag stitches you can only reverse in straight stitch. I tore that nylon gear out 😮

Oh my Elna has a speed control because it does sew fast. Handy for lighter weight fabrics so you don’t accidentally go too fast and warp it.

I was given an Elna SU and I can’t move my needle position knob. Can you tell me how to fix it?

Very common problem with a machine that has just been sitting. The vintage Elna group (Facebook) I am a member of is wonderful. Totally knowledgeable. Answers questions. Polite. Files with information on the 62C. It was 6/7 years ago now. But I just put my (bequeathed) Elna 62C in a sunny room inside. Got a tea towel for purchase. Cleaned and oiled in the correct places. (Google it. So you don’t miss a spot. There is one in the bobbin case area). Use good & correct Oil. Then I used said tea towel and used some hand grunt. I only pushed the dial with my hand with a light tea towel over fingers to get traction. One way. Then the other. I did this throughout the day when I passed the machine. Left it. The next day the same. And repeat. 4/5 days later it was nice and smooth. Others used hair dryers (carefully) after oiling. Follow instruction for this as you don’t want to melt the dial. It’s fixable. White east when you know how and have patience. Jon the vintage Elna group on Facebook. So worth it.
