This is how I feel about myself, too. Sometimes I think it is a self fulfilling prophecy at a certain point. You worry about your inability to communicate and it disables you in the moment. I have been trying to go a little easier on myself and try to focus on asking questions that allow people to talk about themselves and then I try to just listen, maybe ask specific questions for clarity or to allow them to elaborate further. @@cm9241 Idk I think most of us who are awkward at socializing get _particularly_ hurt by small talk though because talking overall is painful, but when you can’t even be deeply distracted by the subject, you then become even more anxious on what you’re suppose to talk, how you’re gonna talk, what someone is thinking about you right now, instead of only focusing on the conversation - that the cooler it is the more you forget you loathe to be there. Saying that this is a huge problem, not something to brag about indeed (wich I doubt many do it because they think is genuinely cool but because they’re insecure and want others to think they’re not as uncool - or even make someone as uncomfortable as them)

I think too many people here are misconstruing an aversion to dishonesty as a hatred of small talk. Small talk is important, healthy and incredibly useful. But, sometimes, people will try to engage you in small talk for totally dishonest reasons - not because they care. Either because they are trying to 'test' you, or just want to be seen talking to you. It's the disingenuous tendencies that people like this bring with small talk that's the issue. A person who truly hates small talk will be incapable of communicating with children, for instance. Because, that's literally all children do.
