My argument was that I did not believe the "republic for which it stands" ideals were aligned with mine, that it is foolish to pledge loyalty to a leader that cares not for me, and mostly, if it isn't a **voluntary** pledge then it is no longer a pledge, but more like totalitarian programming. I was allowed to sit outside in the hallway for the duration of the pledge. That didn't last long. Two weeks later it was recited for the last time in that school.
